If a Lanair waste oil heater will not start, will not establish a flame, or shuts down after firing, first identify the exact model and follow that model’s manual. Lanair’s XT and MX troubleshooting charts describe overlapping possibilities, but their procedures and settings are not interchangeable. Start with the symptom, make only the external checks permitted by your manual, and stop for qualified service if diagnosis requires opening fuel plumbing, electrical testing, or work on a safety control.
Start with the heater model and its manual
Find the model name or number on the heater’s identification label, then use the matching manual from Lanair’s manuals index. The index covers multiple current and legacy series. Use the troubleshooting chart and service instructions for that specific family; do not transfer pressure settings, electrical values, or procedures from another model.
Separate the problem into two basic symptoms: the burner does not start at all, or it starts its firing sequence but does not establish and maintain a flame. These point to different parts of the system, and the XT manual treats them separately.
Why won’t my Lanair waste oil heater start?
For XT models, Lanair’s manual lists several possible causes when the burner will not start:

- A tripped main breaker, a disconnect-switch issue, or a fuse problem.
- A thermostat problem.
- An oil-primary controller fault.
- A flame-sensor or light-related issue.
Begin with only the external checks and reset steps authorized by the manual for your model. If a breaker trips again, a fuse fails, or the control indicates a fault, do not keep cycling power or substitute parts at random; the underlying electrical or control fault needs diagnosis. This XT list is not a universal Lanair checklist.
Why does my Lanair heater fire and then shut off, or fail to ignite?
A burner that attempts to fire but does not establish a stable flame is a different problem from a burner that never starts. The XT and MX manuals list potential causes across fuel delivery, ignition, combustion air, draft, and restricted passages. These are diagnostic possibilities, not a guarantee that every cause applies to every series.

Fuel supply and contamination
Check the fuel level and supply conditions allowed by your model manual. The XT chart includes low or contaminated fuel; the MX chart also identifies contaminated fuel as a possible flame-establishment problem. Water or other contamination can disrupt operation, but the correct checks and fuel requirements are model-specific.
Nozzle, preheater, and fuel passage
A clogged or worn nozzle, a blocked preheater passage, or a preheater problem appears among the possible causes in the cited manuals. The XT chart also identifies preheater-switch or heater issues; the MX chart identifies nozzle or preheater obstruction. Cleaning or replacement should follow the procedure and parts guidance for the exact model rather than a generic online instruction.

Ignition and combustion air
The XT manual lists ignition transformer or electrode problems, air-pressure or solenoid issues, water in the air system, and combustion-blower adjustment among its possible causes. The MX chart separately includes incorrect air or fuel pressure and blower issues. Because the expected settings differ by model and pump configuration, do not adjust pressure by borrowing a value from another heater.
Draft and blocked exhaust passages
Improper draft and plugged heat-exchanger or chimney passages appear in the XT troubleshooting chart. The MX manual also lists improper draft and blocked exchanger, manifold, or chimney passages. Use the manual’s inspection and draft-check instructions; do not assume that a clean-looking exterior proves the exhaust path is clear.

What if fuel pressure fluctuates?
The MX manual connects fluctuating fuel-gauge readings with possible water or antifreeze in the fuel, air entering the system, leaks in suction plumbing, a dirty strainer, or seal problems. It also describes fuel-flow checks whose targets depend on the heater model and pump type. Follow that exact manual rather than treating its checks or target flow as universal.
If the diagnosis requires opening fuel plumbing, checking for leaks, or bypassing a control circuit, stop and use qualified service help. Do not loosen fittings or improvise a flow test without the model-specific procedure and suitable competence.

What if the preheater is not heating?
For the MX models covered by its manual, possible causes include defective or disconnected cartridge heaters and a snap-disc issue. That manual gives model-specific electrical resistance values; they should not be applied to other Lanair series. Electrical measurements and repairs can expose you to hazardous voltage. Isolate power as the manual requires, and leave testing or repair to a qualified technician if you are not trained to do it safely.
Do not bypass the oil-primary safety circuit
The Lanair MX 150/200 manual states: “DO NOT OPERATE YOUR HEATER IF THE OIL PRIMARY SAFETY CIRCUIT IS NOT WORKING!” A safety-control failure is not a routine reset or workaround. Do not jumper, bypass, or operate the heater with that circuit disabled; have the fault diagnosed and corrected before returning the heater to service.
Cleaning, maintenance, and parts
Lanair’s videos page lists resources on ignition testing, preheater clog and flow diagnosis, primary-control troubleshooting, fuel priming, chimney and chamber cleaning, and nozzle or preheater replacement. Treat videos as supplementary to the manual, not as proof that a hazardous repair is safe for an untrained operator.
Once a fault is identified, use Lanair’s parts catalog to check model-filtered components. It lists categories including burner, chamber, preheater, blower, pump, strainer, gauge, and maintenance-kit parts. Confirm exact model compatibility before ordering because catalog availability and compatibility can change. Do not replace parts speculatively to mask an undiagnosed fault.

Contact Lanair when the manual does not resolve the symptom, when the diagnosis involves safety controls or electrical or fuel-system work, or when you need to confirm the correct procedure or replacement part. Lanair’s troubleshooting and support page lists technical support and parts contact details. Check that page for current phone, email, and hours before calling, since support details can change.
