Start with your mower’s exact model number and its manual: Kobalt 40V mowers do not all share the same startup controls, troubleshooting steps, or compatible parts. For any check beneath the deck, remove the battery first. Then use the symptom guide below to work through basic checks without attempting repairs the manual does not authorize.
Before troubleshooting: identify your mower
Find the model number on the mower’s label and use the manual for that model and revision. The available Kobalt manuals cover particular 16-inch and 19-inch mowers; newer 20-inch and 21-inch models may have different controls and features. A 40V label alone does not establish that a battery, blade, or procedure fits every mower. Current examples are listed on Lowe’s Kobalt 40V mower listings, but your model manual is the reference for operation and compatibility.
Before inspecting or servicing the mower, remove the battery. The 16-inch manual says, “Always remove battery when servicing or transporting the mower.” Follow the safety section of your own manual, including its instructions for the safety lock-out and bail lever; do not bypass either control.
If the mower will not start or the blade will not engage
Check battery seating and charge
Older 16-inch and 19-inch manuals list a discharged battery and a battery that is not fully inserted among possible causes. Charge the battery as directed for your model, then reinstall it firmly. The 16-inch manual says it should click into place.

Check for a blade obstruction with the battery removed
Grass or debris around the blade can prevent startup. Remove the battery, then check beneath the deck for an obstruction. On the older 16-inch soft-start mower, even a small amount of grass at startup can stop the motor from turning on. Its manual says the motor takes about three seconds to reach full speed; if it does not start, remove the battery and confirm the blade is unobstructed and can spin freely by hand. Do not inspect the blade with the battery installed.
Use the startup sequence for your exact model
Controls differ across generations. For the KSPM 2040B-03, Kobalt’s Lowe’s support response dated May 1, 2026, directs users to lock the handle in an operating position, hold the blue start button, and pull the blue bail to the handle; release the start button once the blades engage. That sequence is specific to that model, not a universal procedure for Kobalt 40V mowers. Consult your own manual if its controls differ.

When basic checks do not solve it
The older manuals also list a defective switch or a battery that may need replacement. They do not provide a user repair procedure for a failed switch. Contact current Kobalt support or a qualified service provider rather than opening the switch or guessing at a replacement battery. Confirm exact battery compatibility for your mower before buying one.
If the mower stops while you are mowing
Check cutting height and deck debris
The cited 16-inch and 19-inch manuals list a cutting height set too low and grass or debris jammed between the blade and deck as possible causes of shutdown. Raise the cutting height if it is set low for the conditions. If you inspect for debris, remove the battery first and follow the manual’s safe cleaning directions.

Consider battery charge and temperature
A low or depleted charge is another listed cause. The 19-inch manual also identifies excessive operating temperature and says to move that model to a cool, dry location and let it rest for 30 minutes. Treat that rest period as guidance for the 19-inch model covered by that manual, not a reset rule for every Kobalt mower.

Uneven cut
The manuals point to rough or uneven ground and an incorrectly set cutting height. Check the lawn surface and adjust the wheel setting as directed by your model’s manual; the cited older manuals recommend a higher setting when cut quality is uneven.

Weak mulching
Wet clippings can stick beneath the deck, and a missing mulching plug can impair mulching on the 16-inch model. Wait for wet grass to dry before mowing, and check that the plug is installed as specified for your mower.
Hard to push or struggling in thick grass
Grass that is too tall or a cutting height set too low can make pushing harder. Raise the height and, in thick grass, slow your walking pace. The 16-inch manual also advises cutting no more than one-third of the total grass length at a time, checking blade sharpness at least yearly, and emptying the catcher bag if the rear of the housing or blade drags in thick grass. These are instructions from that model’s manual, not a universal seasonal height schedule.
If the mower vibrates abnormally
Stop the mower and do not continue operating it with high-speed vibration. The cited manuals list a bent motor shaft or an unbalanced blade as possible causes. The 16-inch manual directs the owner to stop the motor, disconnect the mower from its power source, inspect it for damage, and have damage repaired before restarting; it also says to contact customer service if vibration persists and to call about an unbalanced blade. Do not attempt a shaft repair or keep mowing to see whether the vibration clears.
When to contact Kobalt support
Contact Kobalt through its current support channel if the basic model-approved checks do not resolve the problem, the switch or battery may be defective, or the mower has damage or persistent vibration. Manuals identify customer service at 1-888-356-2258, but schedules can change; verify current contact options on Kobalt support. Have the mower model number and battery information available, and describe the symptom and checks already completed.
