A plywood benchtop jointer is a possible DIY woodworking project, but plywood alone does not establish that the finished machine will be flat, rigid, accurate, durable, or safe. The plans surfaced for this project specify different plywood thicknesses, and the available evidence does not validate one engineering design. Treat the plan you choose as a starting point, verify its construction carefully, and make cutterhead guarding and safe workholding non-negotiable.
What a jointer does—and what it does not do
A jointer flattens one face of a board or straightens an edge. In operation, stock passes over a rotating, multiple-knife cutterhead while held against a guide; the front table adjusts to set the cut depth. A thickness planer serves a different purpose: it reduces thickness and makes the opposite face parallel to the first. The distinction is described by Electrical Safety First.
A benchtop machine will generally offer less working width and length than a full-size shop jointer, but no reliable capacity figure is established for the plywood design discussed here. Do not assume it can handle a particular board width or length unless the specific plan states that capacity and the finished machine can support the work safely.
What the surfaced plywood plans specify
The listed plywood thicknesses differ between two surfaced plan sources. A MAZAY DIY plans PDF lists “Plywood 18 mm or 21 mm” (MAZAY plans PDF), while the MAZAY project page lists “Plywood 10 mm OR 12 mm” (MAZAY project page). The available information does not establish whether these are different design versions, apply to different parts, or which thickness suits a particular build.

- Spiral cutterhead system utilizes 12 staggered HSS blades for an ultra fine finish
- Features a spacious 30-by-6-inch table
- Remove 0 to 1/8 of an inch of material with each pass
- Adjustable 19-3/4 by 4-1/4-inch fence bevels up to 45 degrees
Use the thickness specified in the exact plan you are following; do not combine these figures into a general recommendation. Before building, check that the plan accounts for the stiffness and flatness needed in the base and tables, and that its joints and supports resist movement under use. Plywood construction is not, by itself, proof of a sufficiently rigid or precise machine.
How to approach the build
Plans surfaced for this project describe a torsion-style base, table assemblies, a fence, gussets, and guard mounts. Those are plan-specific design elements, not evidence that the completed machine has been independently tested or proven accurate. Treat each assembly as part of a system: a table that moves, a fence that is out of square, or a guard mount that shifts can compromise the work and increase risk.

- Spiral Cutterhead - Cutterhead with 6 rows that holds staggered tungsten carbide inserts for a smooth finish. The design of the cutterhead along with the use of in-house made inserts make cuts with the lowest amp draw compared to others.
- Two-sided Inserts - Two-sided inserts sit in perfect alignment to the spiral cutterhead. Non-cutting edge designed to prevent insert from skewing while planing. The precision is superior to 4-sided inserts.
- Adjustable 24" long aluminum Fence - Features quick stops at 90° and 135° for versatile cutting angles.
- Fence Enhancement Brackets - Fence enhancement brackets stabilize both ends of the fence for a flawless cut. (Patented in Taiwan.)
- Elevation Control - Say goodbye to table inconsistencies with the additional guide post. Parallel tables translate to straight cuts at any different depth.
- Follow one complete plan rather than mixing dimensions or parts from different versions.
- Check the tables for flatness and alignment, and verify that the fence is square to the table before use; Electrical Safety First also recommends checking fence squareness.
- Confirm that the guard covers the working side of the cutterhead and remains positioned to protect the unused portion during operation.
- Do not infer service life, precision, or safe cutting capacity from the material choice or from a plan illustration.
A separate wooden-bed jointer described by Fine Woodworking is an example of a wood-based machine structure, not a performance comparison or validation of this plywood benchtop design. Its stated capabilities should not be transferred to this project.
Cutterhead guarding and workholding are essential
A horizontal-head jointer exposes a severe hazard at the rotating cutterhead. OSHA’s workplace rule for horizontal-head jointers, 29 CFR 1910.213(j), specifies a cylindrical cutterhead, limits knife projection to no more than 1/8 inch beyond the cutterhead body, and limits rear-table clearance to no more than 1/8 inch. It also requires a guard over the working side that adjusts to cover the unused portion and remains in contact with the stock. These provisions apply to covered workplaces; they are not a certification or approval of a homemade machine.

- Variable speed: range of 6,000 to 11,000 RPM allows the user to select the right speed for the size and hardness of material
- Easy replacement and knife adjustments: two-knife cutter head with Jackscrew knife leveling arrangement allows for easy replacement and adjustment of knives
- Accurate cutting: center-mounted fence gives needed support throughout the cut for accurate edge jointing
- Hard and soft woods: heavy duty 10 Amp motor provides power for hard and soft woods
- Support and accuracy: 4-1/4-in center mounted fence for support and accuracy
OSHA’s jointer eTool identifies hand contact, kickback, and flying particles as hazards. It recommends a self-enclosing guard, hold-down push blocks for stock narrower than 3 inches, and avoiding deep cuts because they increase kickback likelihood and require a larger table opening. It also gives a general rule against jointing pieces shorter than four times the width of the bed opening. Treat these as risk-reduction guidance, not proof that a DIY jointer is safe.
- Use a functional guard that protects the cutterhead opening; push blocks do not replace guarding.
- Use jointer push blocks to keep hands away from the cutterhead, particularly when handling narrow stock.
- Support the work securely and keep it flush to the fence and tables while feeding.
- Take shallow cuts rather than deep passes. No single safe cut depth is established for this plywood design.
- Wear appropriate protective equipment, and unplug the machine before maintenance or adjustment, as Electrical Safety First advises.
The exact-title article suggests a light pass of around 1/32 inch or less, but that is not an engineering-validated or universal safe setting. A homemade machine’s condition, stock, cutterhead, and design all matter; do not use that figure as a substitute for a sound guard, secure workholding, and a cautious assessment of the machine.

What a plan cannot establish
The available plan descriptions do not establish verified capacity, accuracy, durability, or safe operating performance for a completed plywood benchtop jointer. A commercial King Canada 6-inch benchtop jointer listing includes two safety push blocks (King Canada product listing), but this is a product-detail comparison, not a tested benchmark for a homemade build.
Do not operate a machine if its tables or fence move, the guard fails to cover the exposed cutterhead, or stock cannot be supported and controlled throughout the cut. If the plan does not provide a workable guarding arrangement or clear construction details for stable tables and a fence, do not improvise around those omissions and assume the result is safe.
