A stable tabletop starts with a flat top, a support structure suited to its material, and fasteners that secure it without blocking seasonal wood movement. For a solid-wood top, that usually means attaching it to a rigid apron frame with movement-friendly hardware; battens can help resist cupping when there is no apron frame.
Start with a flat top and a suitable support
Support cannot reliably correct a top that was assembled out of flat. Begin with flat material, then pair it with a structure that holds the top while supporting its intended use. Bill Hylton of Popular Woodworking describes a rigid leg-and-apron frame as a common way to do this, with battens as one option when a framed base is absent. Popular Woodworking’s guidance on keeping tabletops flat does not prescribe one design for every table.
Leg-and-apron frame
An apron connects the legs below the top and provides a solid attachment point around the table. This is a practical choice for many tables, but the top still needs to be fastened in a way that accommodates wood movement.
Battens for an unframed top
Battens attached across the underside can help resist cupping when a leg-and-apron frame is not being used. Their usefulness depends on the top’s dimensions, material, and construction; they are not a universal substitute for a properly designed base.

Let solid wood move as humidity changes
Solid wood expands and contracts as its moisture content changes. A tabletop attachment should hold the top firmly while allowing that seasonal movement, rather than clamping it so rigidly that the top is forced to fight the base. Fine Woodworking discusses aprons, cleats, and breadboard ends as approaches to keeping tops flat, and emphasizes movement-tolerant attachment. Read Fine Woodworking’s tabletop guidance.
Attach the top to the apron with movement in mind
Figure-eight tabletop fasteners are one option for joining a solid-wood top to an apron. They secure the top while allowing some movement at the connection. They are a useful search term when sourcing hardware, not a guarantee against cupping, twisting, or a wobbly base.

Avoid a rigid plywood backer as a default fix
Plywood and solid wood respond differently to moisture. WOOD Magazine warns that bonding a plywood backer to a solid-wood top can cause cupping because the materials expand and contract at different rates. It also advises limiting boards in an edge-glued top to no more than 5 inches wide and describes figure-eight connectors at the apron as one way to allow movement. Choose the advice that fits the top material

APA notes that plywood and oriented strand board (OSB) expand or shrink slightly as moisture content changes. Its acclimatization and spacing recommendations address structural-panel installation contexts. For example, its technical note discusses an 1/8-inch edge gap among measures for reducing buckling in sheathing; that is not a blanket spacing rule for furniture tops. Check the whole table if it still feels unstable
A flat top and sound attachment do not, by themselves, establish that a table will feel stable. The base must also suit the table’s dimensions and intended loads. Before final assembly, check that the top begins flat, the base is rigid, the top attachment can accommodate seasonal movement, and any panel-installation advice you follow is intended for your application. The cited woodworking guidance does not establish a single best construction for every table; dimensions, species, grain, joinery, humidity range, and loads all affect the design.
