After it firms, demold and finish it, continue curing, and let water leach through the container before planting. Use Portland cement—not premixed concrete—and choose one recipe rather than combining ratios from different guides.
Choose a recipe and understand the trade-offs
Hypertufa is a porous, relatively lightweight cement-based material made to resemble tufa stone. Portland cement binds the mix; peat or coir and a lightweight aggregate such as perlite give it texture and reduce weight. Premixed concrete already contains sand or gravel, so it is not a substitute for Portland cement in these recipes.
Measure each ingredient by volume, using the same container for every part. The recipes below are alternatives, not ingredients to blend together.
| Recipe or mix | Proportions by volume | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Oregon State University Extension coir recipe | 3 parts coir, 2 parts Type I–II Portland cement, 3 parts perlite | Uses coir instead of peat. OSU describes perlite mixes as lighter but less durable than sand-containing mixes. OSU Extension recipe and durability guidance. |
| North Carolina Cooperative Extension basic recipe | 1 part Portland cement, 1 part peat moss, 1 part perlite | An optional handful of polystyrene fibers is noted in the extension recipe. North Carolina Cooperative Extension recipe. |
| Washington State University Extension trough recipe | 1 part Portland cement, 1½ parts fine peat, 1½ parts horticultural vermiculite and/or perlite | WSU says coir can replace peat at the stated ratio relationship; it decomposes more slowly and leaves fewer pits and crevices. WSU trough guide. |
| Sand-containing mix | Not stated as a single ratio in OSU’s durability comparison | OSU gives approximate published estimates of about 20 years for sand mixes and around 10 years for perlite mixes handled gently. These are not guarantees or controlled-trial results; sand adds weight, and plant roots or rough handling can hasten breakdown. OSU Extension durability guidance. |
In general, increasing cement tends to increase strength and weight. Increasing lightweight ingredients tends to reduce weight and increase porosity, but can compromise strength. Decide whether lower weight, greater durability, a particular texture, or using coir rather than peat matters most for your trough; there is no single recipe that suits every size and use.

- Plastic Frames: Sturdy outer shell to support concrete weight without wall bulging outwards, ensure that the flower pot produced will not deform.
- Reusable: This re-use smooth surface silicone mold is used to make plants pot, flower pots, DIY flower pot molds, planter pot mold or home/garden decorations, easy to demould, easy to clean.
- Size: 18.5 x 12.5cm/ 7.3 x 4.9inch (D*H) is mold size. 15 x 12cm/ 5.9 x 4.7inch (D*H) is finished product size.
- Multi-Use: Can be used with concrete, cement, clay, plaster to make succulent planters, candle containers. Welcome to try !
- How to Make The Pot Stronger ? We'd better add some coarse sand and crushed stone into the cement to make it a solid whole, just like the concrete used for building houses. In this way, place the flower tray in a cool and ventilated place and wait for natural drying. During drying, pay attention to the curing condition. If the temperature is too high, sprinkle water properly to avoid weakening the curing effect caused by too fast drying.
Gather the mold and safety supplies
You can use nested boxes or a suitable container lined with plastic. The outer mold determines the trough’s outside shape; a smaller inner mold creates the cavity. A plastic-lined cardboard box is another documented approach. Have a mixing container and removable dowels or similar pieces ready to form drainage holes before mixing, so the wet material does not have to wait.
- Portland cement and the ingredients for your selected recipe
- A consistent measuring container and a mixing tub
- A mold and plastic liner, if needed
- Dowels or other removable drainage-hole formers
- Gloves and eye protection; suitable respiratory protection when dust exposure warrants it
- A trowel, stiff brush, or metal tool for shaping or texturing
Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, away from breezes that can carry dust, and follow the labels on the materials you buy. Avoid breathing dry cement, peat, or perlite dust. Wet Portland cement is strongly alkaline; prolonged skin contact can irritate or chemically burn skin. Wear gloves and protect your eyes. Washington State University also recommends old clothing and keeping the work area away from children and pets. North Carolina Cooperative Extension safety guidance and WSU safety guidance.

Mix the hypertufa until it holds together
- Measure the dry ingredients for one recipe by volume and combine them thoroughly in the mixing tub.
- Add water a little at a time while mixing. Stop when the material is moist, cohesive, and stiff enough to stay where you pack it.
- Squeeze a handful to check the consistency. If it crumbles apart, add a little water; if it pours or slumps, it is too wet. Avoid adding water all at once, because a mix that is too loose will be harder to shape and hold in the mold.
Pack the mold and form drainage
Set up the mold before mixing. For nested boxes, WSU describes leaving about 2 inches between the inner and outer box; it also describes optional chicken-wire reinforcement. Reinforcement and wall dimensions depend on the trough’s size and recipe, so do not assume that one spacing or reinforcement method fits every project.
Pack the mix firmly across the base, then build up the walls. Published wall guidance differs: Oregon State University Extension recommends a 2–3 inch base and walls at least 3 inches thick, while North Carolina Cooperative Extension describes 1½–2 inch walls for many medium planters and thicker walls for large troughs. Treat these as guidance for different approaches, not a universal specification. OSU construction guidance; North Carolina Cooperative Extension construction guidance.

Make drainage openings while the mix is workable. Press holes through the base or insert removable dowels as you pack it, then remove the formers when appropriate. A planted trough needs drainage; without it, water can collect in the container rather than pass through.
Firm, demold, texture, and continue curing
Firming enough to demold is not the same as completing the cure. Conditions and recommendations vary among guides, and no single full-strength cure time applies to every recipe, size, temperature, and moisture condition.

- North Carolina Cooperative Extension: Keep the early mix moist and continue curing for several weeks. Its guidance emphasizes that curing and subsequent leaching are part of preparation before planting. North Carolina Cooperative Extension instructions.
- WSU’s trough method: Allow at least a week to harden, then soak the trough for two weeks, changing the water every 2–3 days. This is one documented method, not a universal timetable. WSU instructions.
Demold and texture when the material is firm enough to hold its shape but still workable for the finish you want. Use a trowel, stiff or wire brush, or another metal tool to roughen the surface. The Chicago Botanic Garden describes distressing a trough for a weathered finish; extra perlite or peat can reduce weight but can also make the finished piece more fragile. Chicago Botanic Garden finishing guidance.

Fresh cement-based material can be alkaline. North Carolina Cooperative Extension recommends leaching it before use by repeatedly filling and draining it, soaking it, or exposing it to rainfall over several weeks. These methods help remove some excess alkalinity, but the guidance does not establish a universal pH endpoint. Do not treat a short firming period as proof that the trough is ready for plants; follow a curing and leaching approach suited to your chosen method.
