Match the stock’s width and height to the dowel’s target diameter, and choose a bit radius equal to half that diameter. Test the setup on a short offcut before shaping the project blank.
How the four-edge method works
Each pass rounds one corner of square stock. Rotate the blank 90 degrees between passes until all four edges are shaped. For the geometry to work, the blank must be square and its cross-section must match the intended dowel diameter; the round-over radius must be half that diameter.
For example, WOOD Magazine’s 2024 demonstration makes a 1/2-inch walnut dowel from 1/2-inch-square stock using a 1/4-inch-radius round-over bit. That is an example, not a universal bit size. For another target diameter, use the matching square stock and half-diameter bit radius, then verify the result with a test piece. WOOD Magazine’s 2024 demonstration shows the example setup.
Prepare and calibrate the stock
- Cut extra material. Make the blank longer than the finished dowel so you have material for handling and can trim the ends after routing. Include a short test piece from the same stock.
- Make the blank square. Joint and plane it so its width and thickness are equal to the target dowel diameter. Uneven or undersized stock will not produce the intended round profile.
- Choose and set up the bit. Install a round-over bit whose radius is half the target diameter. WOOD’s 2024 demonstration sets the bearing even with the fence face and the bit base even with the tabletop; treat those positions as the documented example, and follow your router-table and bit manufacturers’ instructions for your equipment.
- Route the test piece first. Make the four edge passes, then check the sample against a hole of the desired diameter. Adjust the setup if needed and retest before routing the longer blank. WOOD’s written procedure recommends this check rather than relying on nominal dimensions alone. Read the written procedure.
Route the four edges
- Set up the fence and bit for the chosen round-over profile, and use appropriate guarding and workholding for your specific table, router, bit, and blank.
- Route one edge of the blank against the fence.
- Rotate the blank 90 degrees and route the next edge. Repeat until all four edges have been routed.
- Trim the squared ends and cut the shaped dowel to its final length.
The 2024 WOOD demonstration shows a featherboard against the fence and leaves extra stock length for handling before trimming. WOOD’s written instructions mention a pushstick. These are examples of handling aids in those particular setups, not a complete safety standard. Follow the operating instructions for your router, table, bit, and accessories; do not assume the method suits every blank length or table configuration. See the demonstrated setup.

When a rotating-blank jig is a better fit
A separate approach uses a guide block and a core-box bit: drill a guide hole through the block, rout a recess for the bit, align the bit to the hole, taper the blank’s leading end, then feed the blank through while rotating it with a hand drill. Fine Woodworking describes this jig-based process, and Highland Woodworking also describes a router-and-drill jig with guide blocks. Follow one jig’s instructions as a complete setup rather than combining pieces of it with the four-edge fence method. A dowel tenoning jig is a different tool: it cuts tenons on dowels that already exist; it is not a jig for making dowel stock. Woodcraft’s guide describes that distinction.
