How to Make Repeatable Miters on a Router Table

A same-size template lets the bit bearing follow the workpiece after its flat edge is removed. Learn the router-table setup, cutting sequence and partial-depth alternative.

To cut mitered ends on small project parts, use a 45-degree chamfer bit with a same-size plywood or MDF template taped to the workpiece. The template gives the bit’s bearing a surface to follow after the cut removes the workpiece’s flat edge. Set the fence and bit height to suit both pieces, and use a scrapwood backer block to help keep the stock steady.

What you need for the template method

  • A router table and 45-degree chamfer bit.
  • Plywood or MDF cut to the same dimensions as each workpiece.
  • Double-face tape to attach the template to the workpiece’s good face.
  • A scrapwood backer block to support the workpiece during the cut.

In WOOD Magazine’s method, the chamfer bit forms the miter angle. The template is a functional guide: it preserves bearing contact where the workpiece’s original flat edge is cut away. This is a technique for small project parts, not a measured guarantee of accuracy. WOOD Magazine’s router-table miter method describes the approach.

How to cut the miters

  1. Size the parts and template. Cut the workpieces to their final width and length. Cut a plywood or MDF template to those same dimensions.
  2. Attach the template. Apply double-face tape to the workpiece’s good face and position the template on it. Keep the template’s ends and edges flush with the workpiece.
  3. Set up the router table. Adjust the fence so it is flush with the bit bearing. Set the bit height to cut through the full thickness of the workpiece without cutting into the template. Check the relationship between the fence, bearing, workpiece and template before machining.
  4. Support and cut the first end. Use a scrapwood backer block to help keep the workpiece steady as you make the cut.
  5. Cut the opposite end. Rotate the workpiece and machine the other end. For identical parts, reuse the template.

WOOD Magazine Staff characterized its method this way: “For cutting miters in small project parts, nothing matches the dead-on accurate results of a router table equipped with a chamfer bit.” That is the magazine’s editorial assessment, not a published comparative measurement.

What to do if one pass cannot cut the full thickness

If your router cannot make the full-depth chamfer cut, make a template for each workpiece and cut all the parts at a partial depth. Raise the bit incrementally, then make another pass on every part. Repeat the sequence until the cuts reach final depth. Keep the fence and support arrangement consistent as you work through the parts.

  • 4.Military-Grade Durability: Aerospace-grade aluminum with anodized coating resists wear 50% longer than standard jigs, maintaining accuracy through heavy-duty joinery tasks
  • 5.Portable & Versatile: Lightweight (1.3kg per unit) and works on router tables/table saws; cuts reinforced miter joints and hidden dovetails for boxes, frames, and custom art projects

Should you use a lock-miter bit instead?

A 45-degree chamfer bit cuts a mitered edge; a lock-miter bit cuts a different, interlocking joint. These are distinct setups, not interchangeable instructions.

Option What it does When it fits Trade-off
45-degree chamfer bit with template Cuts the miter angle; the template provides bearing contact. Small or repeated parts where a straightforward mitered edge is wanted. Requires a same-size template, tape, careful fence and height setup, and support. WOOD Magazine
45-degree lock-miter bit Cuts an interlocking joint; one board is routed flat and its mate vertically. Projects where interlocking geometry and self-alignment are desired. Uses a different joint design and setup. Fine Woodworking describes the joint’s larger glue surface and self-aligning parts; those benefits do not make it a substitute for the chamfer-bit method. Fine Woodworking; Infinity Tools

Fine Woodworking also describes removing most waste before finishing a cut with a router in its lock-miter workflow. That is part of its separate method, not a step in the WOOD Magazine template procedure.

Chaoos Router Box Joint Jig, Aluminum Slide Rail-3 Keys (¼”,⅜”,½”)
  • 【BOX JOINT JIG & FINGER JOINT JIG FOR ROUTER TABLES】Create interlocking finger joints for small to medium-sized boxes, drawers and cabinets. This woodworking jig guides repeated router cuts and helps position matching workpieces for clean, tight-fitting joints.
  • 【THREE INTERCHANGEABLE BRASS INDEXING KEYS】This finger joint jig includes 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" solid brass indexing keys for common finger widths. Insert the selected key into the carriage and index each cut for consistent spacing without remeasuring after setup.
  • 【ALUMINUM-ALLOY SLIDE RAILS】 The front-and-rear slide rails are upgraded to aluminum alloy to support smooth, controlled sled movement and help reduce wobble during routing. The sled platform remains melamine-coated MDF, providing a low-friction surface, while the sacrificial fence face helps reduce tear-out. Fits a standard 3/4 inch miter slot on router tables and table saws.
  • 【COMPLETE KIT, BEGINNER-FRIENDLY】 Includes 3 brass indexing keys(1/4", 3/8", 1/2"), 2 soft-grip locking knobs, 1 melamine MDF platform, 1 glass-filled nylon sled and 1 sacrificial fence face. Setup: place the jig in the 3/4" miter slot, position the carriage against a key, lock the knob and set bit height. Make a test cut before routing your project pieces.
  • 【RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT】 Each jig is checked before shipment to help verify the listed components are included. Safety and setup limits

The cited method does not establish a universal router speed, maximum stock thickness, or compatibility for every bit and router. Follow the specific router and cutter manufacturers’ instructions for speed, capacity and safe use. A fence, template and backer block help control the work, but do not replace model-specific guidance. For general router-table fence and support considerations, see Woodcraft’s router-table setup guide.

JessEm 06300 Box Joint & Finger Joint Jig for Router Tables, 3 Key Sizes
  • FITS MOST ROUTER TABLES - Locks into a standard 3/4" miter slot. Just check that the distance from your miter track to the center of the router bit falls between 5-11/16" and 7-3/16". Also works on shaper tables with a standard track.
  • TIGHT, GAP-FREE FINGER JOINTS - Machined aluminum indexing keys set exact finger spacing, so drawers, boxes and cabinets slide together square and snug. No layout lines or math; one test cut dials in the fit, even for first-time box jointers.
  • 3 KEY SIZES, 3 SACRIFICIAL FENCES - Swap between 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" keys, each with its own Baltic birch fence that backs up the cut to reduce tearout and blowout in plywood, hardwood and end grain.
  • SMOOTH BEARING GLIDE, 4-1/4" TRAVEL - Four sealed R4 bearings carry the sled with almost no friction, so every pass lands in the same place. Great for batching drawer sides, gift boxes, keepsake boxes and jewelry boxes in one setup.
  • SAFER, ORGANIZED SHOP WORK - An adjustable bit guard shields your hands, a dovetail slot accepts Micro-Jig MatchFit clamps, and open router lift access lets you set bit height without removing the plate. Hangs on the wall for storage.
