The four steps below cover site assessment, collector assembly, plumbing and operation. They are editorial stages—not a one-size-fits-all engineering plan: collector size, flow, mounting and freeze protection depend on your pool, climate and plumbing.
1. Assess the pool, sunlight and mounting area
Before buying tubing or cutting into plumbing, establish how much heat you need and where the collector could go. The IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme identifies solar availability, wind, average regional temperatures, orientation and tilt as factors in sizing a solar pool-heating system. It recommends a proper sizing calculation rather than a universal tubing length or temperature promise. IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme
- Note the pool’s surface area, the swimming season you want to extend and your preferred water temperature.
- Check how many hours the proposed roof or open area receives unobstructed sun during that season.
- Confirm that the structure or ground support can be securely anchored, and check local building and zoning requirements before mounting a collector.
- Choose orientation and tilt for your hemisphere, latitude and the season when you want heat; there is no single best angle for every site.
A pool cover reduces heat loss and can reduce the load the collector must meet. The IEA recommends addressing pool efficiency with a cover before sizing the solar system. A cover retains heat when the pool is idle; it does not generate heat.
2. Assemble a sun-exposed tubing collector
The basic seasonal collector is dark tubing arranged on a frame or other suitable support in full sun. The IEA calls a black hose in the sun the simplest solar collector, while warning that it is not very efficient or durable. A homemade hose coil should not be treated as equivalent to a manufactured solar panel.

- HIGH-HEAT PERFORMANCE - SwimEasy solar pool heaters capture more heat from the sun with superior absorber technology. They also enable water to move effectively through the collector by removing flow barriers with its specially crafted over-molded header. These features combine to give SwimEasy solar pool heater panels extreme heating capabilities!
- SUPERIOR HEAT TRANSFER – SwimEasy’s manifold is molded directly around the absorber tubes, eliminating flow barriers and allowing water to freely exit the manifold into each absorber tube. Flow is one of the most important elements to a solar pool heater. The water flowing through the system is what transfers heat from the collector to your pool. The more water that flows through your panels, the more heat that’s transferred to your pool.

You’ll receive a comprehensive installation manual with step-by-step instructions and unlimited access to our expert installation specialists!
Use tubing whose manufacturer specifications address outdoor UV exposure, pressure and compatibility with pool water and its treatment chemicals. Those properties vary by material and product; the fact that tubing is black or sold for irrigation does not establish that it is suitable for this installation. Design the support and attachment to hold the tubing securely without crushing it, and avoid tight bends that kink or restrict flow.
One Instructables author describes a 4-by-4-foot black-painted plywood board carrying 200 feet of 1/2-inch irrigation hose secured with zip ties, and notes kinks at the corners. That is one project example, not a sizing standard or a tested performance plan. Instructables project example

Collector area and tubing length must be selected for your site and system. Do not infer a pool-heating result from the tubing length in someone else’s build. The IEA’s general description gives 2–5 degrees per pass and 10–20 degrees for a properly sized solar system, but does not specify a measurement protocol; those figures are not a prediction for a DIY coil or a particular pool.
3. Connect it after the filter, with a bypass
In a direct system, pool water passes through the collector and returns to the pool. The collector is part of the circulation system, so its added resistance and the plumbing arrangement affect flow. The IEA says a pump sized for filtration is almost always adequate for solar pool heating, but a booster may be needed when it is not. Long runs of small-bore tubing can add head loss, so do not choose a pump size without considering the existing plumbing, collector and required filtration flow.

Arrange the collector downstream of the filter and include valves that let you route water through it or bypass and isolate it. That allows the collector to be taken out of circuit for service, backwashing or periods when it cannot add useful heat. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s archived overview shows a system arrangement that includes valves, a drain valve, vacuum breaker or automatic air relief, controller and optional booster pump; which components are needed depends on the installation. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency pool-water efficiency overview
Because the correct fittings and valve arrangement depend on pipe diameter and the existing equipment, use compatible parts and follow their installation instructions. If the plumbing changes could interfere with filtration, pressure limits or safe discharge, have a qualified pool professional review the design before operating it.

4. Run it only when it can add heat, then protect it
A solar controller can compare the collector and pool temperatures using two sensors, then direct water through the collector when it is warmer. The IEA describes this sensor-and-controller approach. Without automatic control, operate the bypass so water circulates through the collector only when it can contribute heat; circulating through a sun-cooled collector after dark can instead shed heat.
Cover the pool when it is not in use to reduce heat loss. In freezing conditions, do not assume a generic tubing coil can safely remain full of water outdoors. Follow the collector and plumbing manufacturers’ freeze limits. A drain-back arrangement is one possible cold-weather design, but safe drainage and freeze protection depend on the equipment and installation. Year-round systems in colder climates are commonly more involved, using glazed copper collectors, heat-transfer fluid and a heat exchanger rather than sending pool water directly through a simple seasonal coil. Have a cold-climate or indirect system designed for local conditions.

Manufactured collectors are designed for 15–20 years according to the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme; that general statement applies to manufactured collectors, not homemade tubing. For a large collector area, roof mounting or year-round cold-weather use, compare a DIY coil with manufactured solar pool-heating panels or a locally designed installation.
