The key is putting them in the right place: mow or shred leaves that would otherwise mat, keep thick layers off turf, and avoid spreading diseased plant material around susceptible plants.
1. Mulch leaves into the lawn
Mow over dry leaves regularly so the pieces settle between grass blades and decompose. Minnesota Extension’s rule of thumb is to keep mowing while about half or more of the lawn surface remains visible. When less than half is visible, collect the excess and use it elsewhere, such as in a compost pile. A heavy layer can smother grass and contribute to snow mold. Minnesota Extension explains its lawn guidance.
2. Shred leaves for garden-bed mulch
Spread shredded leaves over landscape beds or around shrubs and trees. A layer about two inches deep can help suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Shredding also helps keep leaves from blowing away or matting together. A lawn mower can do the job; a dedicated leaf shredder is optional. University of Illinois Extension describes leaf mulch and its uses.
University of Illinois Extension attributes an estimate of about 150 pounds of nitrogen, 20 pounds of phosphorus, and 65 pounds of potassium per acre to a two-inch layer of leaf mulch. This is an Extension-reported estimate, not a universal fertilizer recommendation; the nutrients available to plants depend on the leaves and how they break down.

3. Add leaves to compost
Dry leaves are a carbon-rich “brown” material. Balance them with nitrogen-rich “greens,” such as vegetable scraps, fresh grass clippings, coffee grounds, or manure. Alternate browns and greens, keep the pile moist, and turn it or otherwise aerate it so air can reach the material. Finished compost is dark and earthy smelling. Illinois Extension’s composting guidance also quotes educator Sarah Vogel: “Composting can be a great way to reduce the amount of biodegradable material entering landfills and save money by reducing lawn bag use.”
Do not add diseased or pesticide-treated plants, weeds with seed heads, meat, bones, dairy, or human or pet waste. If a tree has a recurring foliar disease, do not assume its leaves are safe to mulch around susceptible plants; ask your local Extension service or plant clinic for guidance specific to the disease.

4. Make leaf mold
Leaf mold is decomposed leaf matter. Pile leaves in a yard corner or contain them in a simple wire bin and let them break down. Shredded leaves may be ready in about six months, while whole leaves may take nine to twelve months, according to Illinois Extension; these are approximate timelines, not guarantees. See Illinois Extension’s leaf-mold guidance.
5. Insulate tender plants
Leaves can buffer winter conditions around tender perennials and hardy root crops. For vulnerable perennials, fill a wire or burlap cage with leaves to provide insulation. Wait until temperatures are consistently below freezing before placing leaves around plant crowns. The right timing and amount depend on the plant and local conditions, so use region-specific advice for plants that are especially vulnerable. Illinois Extension outlines this protective use.

6. Keep a leaf-litter area for wildlife
Leave some leaf litter beneath trees or make a leaf pile in a less-used part of the yard. Leaf litter offers overwintering habitat for insects such as butterflies, moths, and beetles, as well as animals including salamanders and toads. Keep heavy accumulations off turf you want to maintain as healthy grass. University of Illinois Extension discusses leaf litter’s habitat value.

| Use | Processing and destination | Timing | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mow into lawn | Mow dry leaves into turf | As leaves fall | Collect excess when less than half the lawn is visible |
| Bed mulch | Shred, then spread on beds or around trees and shrubs | Useful as soon as spread | Whole leaves can mat; shred to help them stay put |
| Compost | Combine leaves with green material; keep moist and aerated | Decomposition takes time | Exclude diseased or pesticide-treated plants and other unsuitable material |
| Leaf mold | Pile or contain leaves | About six months for shredded leaves or nine to twelve months for whole leaves, as approximate Illinois Extension timelines | Actual time varies |
| Plant insulation | Fill a wire or burlap cage around vulnerable perennials | After temperatures are consistently below freezing | Use plant- and climate-appropriate guidance |
| Wildlife habitat | Leave litter or make a pile in a less-used yard area | Seasonal and overwintering habitat | Keep heavy leaf layers off turf that needs to stay healthy |
When a tree’s leaves show recurring disease, the safe handling method depends on the disease and local conditions. Consult a local Extension service or plant clinic before using those leaves as mulch or compost. Penn State Extension provides guidance on leaf diseases of shade trees.
