To start a community Maker Faire, build an active production team, prepare an event plan, and apply for a signed license before using the Maker Faire name or trademark. Maker Faire recommends applying four to six months before your proposed date. While the licensing process proceeds, plan the venue, format, funding, maker outreach, admission, and volunteer support.

Do you need permission to use the Maker Faire name?

Yes. Maker Faire says organizers must have a signed licensing agreement before organizing under the Maker Faire name. Anyone may apply, including individuals and organizations such as schools or nonprofits. Do not announce or promote an event as a Maker Faire, create event-specific Maker Faire social accounts, or use the name in usernames, pages, or profiles until approval. Start with the Maker Faire Licensing Guidelines.

The license fee is not a published flat rate. Fees apply whether an event is free or ticketed and whether the applicant is for-profit or nonprofit; the amount is determined in conversation with the applicant. Licensed organizers receive a logo set for the license term, and designed collateral is subject to review under the identity guidelines. The guidelines describe typical license terms of 12 or 24 months.

How far ahead should you apply?

Maker Faire recommends applying at least four to six months before the proposed event date. That is a planning recommendation, not a guarantee that a decision will be completed by a particular date. Check the current producer application and licensing guidance before setting a public schedule.

How do you prepare a strong application?

The application asks for a practical plan, not just an event idea. Assemble the people and details below before submitting it.

Form an active core team

The producer application requests information about three core team members who are actively producing the event. Be ready to describe their event experience, organizational capacity, affiliations, and connection to Make:, Maker Faire, or local maker spaces.

Choose a name, area, and tentative date

Community Maker Faire names are geographic in origin. If you propose a wider regional name, be ready to explain how that area is commonly known. Check the Maker Faire community page for nearby events as you consider a date.

Describe the event and its resources

The application asks about your proposed venue, event date and area, estimated number of makers and attendees, admission approach, maker recruitment, promotion, funding, and volunteer pool. It also asks about potential local makers and your organizational experience. Funding options named on the form include grants, sponsorships, ticket sales, and vendor booth fees; these are possibilities to describe, not promised sources of support.

If you expect more than 10,000 attendees, the application directs you to contact Maker Faire first. That threshold is an instruction on the current form, so check it again when applying.

Choose a format and scale that fit your community

Maker Faire guidance permits in-person, virtual, hybrid, and distributed formats made up of smaller activations. Events can be intimate local gatherings or larger regional events. Many smaller community events last one day; larger ones often span a weekend, but a weekend is not a requirement.

Decision Options to consider Planning implication
Format In person, virtual, hybrid, or a series of smaller activations Choose the format your team can produce and that best connects participants.
Scale and duration Intimate/local or larger/regional; one day or a longer event Match the scope to your venue, team capacity, maker network, and audience plan.
Admission Free, ticketed, or mixed Decide how people will register or obtain entry and how you will communicate with them.

The licensing guidance says about half of events choose either free or paid admission; it does not give a publication year for that figure. Treat it as general guidance rather than a current-year measure.

What should you look for in a venue?

Start with the kind of program you expect to host, then assess how the space supports makers and visitors. The official guidelines identify indoor and outdoor space, accessibility, permits, insurance, electricity, and internet as considerations.

How should you recruit makers and make the event welcoming?

Build outreach into the plan rather than relying only on people already connected to maker spaces. Maker Faire’s mission guidance calls for a maker network representative of the community and an event inclusive of people who have not made before or who are underserved by educational or creative opportunities.

Do not limit your idea of making to hardware or technology. Maker Faire’s community overview says the event is not limited to hardware, and its vision page describes exhibits, presentations, musical performances, and workshops as possible parts of a program. Ask local groups, educators, artists, hobbyists, and community organizations what they would want to share or learn, then shape the program around the people who live there.

Plan registration, admission, and promotion

Admission may be free, ticketed, or a mix. Maker Faire encourages a robust registration system to support participant communications, permissions, and growth from one year to the next. Choose an approach your team can manage and decide how it will capture the information needed to communicate with participants.

Keep public Maker Faire branding on hold until the license is approved. After approval, use the provided logo set and follow identity guidance; designed collateral is subject to review.
