A reported one-off project reshaped a 12 mm ratcheting wrench into a mechanical key that opened an older car. It is a fabrication curiosity, not a dependable replacement-key method: the account does not establish compatibility with other cars, durability, or the ability to start vehicles that require electronic authorization.
What the wrench-to-key demonstration involved
Hackaday’s September 12, 2021 report describes cutting down the shaft of a 12 mm ratcheting wrench and grinding it to the width and thickness of an older car key. The maker used a Dremel rotary tool with a cutting disc to shape the profile, used calipers to mark channels, then filed and polished the piece. The report says the finished piece opened the car.
That is the extent of what the account establishes: one reported project and one reported result. It does not provide evidence that the piece started the car, worked in other vehicles, or held up to repeated use. Why a mechanical key may not start a modern car
A key that fits and turns a mechanical lock is not necessarily authorized to start the engine. Many modern vehicles use a transponder key or fob that must be programmed to the vehicle’s security system. Shaping a metal blade does not provide that electronic authorization. If you need a working key rather than a fabrication project, contact an automotive locksmith or the vehicle’s dealer and provide the make, model, and year. A professional can advise whether the vehicle needs a mechanically cut key, electronic programming, or both.
