Make Your Woodworking Make Money: A Practical Guide for Small Makers

Turn woodworking into a more disciplined income experiment: validate one product and customer, price the full cost of making and selling, and test demand before scaling.

Woodworking can generate income, but a sale is not the same as a profit. Start with one product and a defined customer, check whether people will pay a price that covers your materials, labor, selling costs and overhead, then test with a small run before investing heavily in stock or equipment.

Choose a product and customer before you scale

There is no reliable universal list of the most profitable woodworking products. A cutting board, sign, toy or piece of furniture might suit one maker and market but not another: skill, available hours, material access, production capacity, competition, shipping costs and demand all affect the outcome.

Instead, describe a narrow offer: what you will make, who is likely to buy it, and where that customer can find it. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) says, “Market research helps you find customers for your business.” Its guidance recommends looking at demand, market size, location, market saturation and prices customers pay for alternatives. SBA market research and competitive analysis

Check the alternatives and test interest

  • Compare products customers could actually choose instead, including competing makers and relevant ready-made goods. Note their price, quality, customization, delivery options and apparent strengths or weaknesses.
  • Ask whether your likely customer values what makes your offer distinct, and whether the price needed to cover your costs is plausible beside those alternatives.
  • Test the idea with a sample, a limited listing or a small production run before committing to substantial inventory or new equipment. This is a practical way to apply market research, not a guarantee that a larger run will sell.

Use product ideas as hypotheses, not as proven best sellers. The cited business guidance does not establish woodworking-specific rankings, typical earnings or margins.

Calculate the cost of making and selling each item

Build a cost sheet for each product. Include more than lumber and hardware: consumables, finishing supplies, direct labor, packaging, seller-paid delivery or shipping, transaction and payment charges, and a reasonable allocation of shop overhead all affect what a sale leaves you.

Etsy’s pricing guidance recommends accounting for costs involved in creating, selling and shipping an item, comparing similar products, and reviewing margins. It is useful bookkeeping advice, not a woodworking-specific price formula. Etsy’s guidance on pricing products

Use a per-item worksheet

  • Variable cost per item: wood and other materials + consumables and finish + direct labor + packaging + shipping or delivery paid by you + transaction and payment costs.
  • Contribution per item: selling price − variable cost per item.
  • Profit for the period: sales revenue − variable costs − fixed costs and other business expenses. Revenue is the money brought in by sales; it is not the amount you keep.

Count time spent selling, communicating about custom orders, packing and fulfilling orders as work. The right labor rate, markup and target margin depend on your circumstances; the sources do not establish one correct figure for every woodworker.

Estimate how many sales cover your fixed costs

The SBA break-even formula is break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (selling price per unit − variable costs per unit). Fixed costs are tied to a period rather than the number of items made; variable costs rise as you produce or sell more. SBA guidance on calculating startup costs and break-even

For example, if fixed costs for a chosen period are $600, the selling price is $100 per item, and variable costs are $60 per item, contribution is $40 and estimated break-even is 15 items for that period. This illustration is arithmetic, not an earnings forecast. Use your own costs, and keep the period consistent: monthly fixed costs should be compared with monthly sales and costs.

Before relying on the estimate, check whether the required number of items is feasible given your work hours, shop capacity and likely demand. Update the figures with actual production costs and sales; break-even is an estimate, not a promise of results.

Choose sales channels based on fit, not promises

Online marketplaces and local craft fairs or markets are possible ways to reach buyers. Compare them against the same practical questions: who shops there, what fees apply, how you will show product quality, how delivery works, how custom orders will be handled, and how much time promotion and fulfillment will take. Neither route is best for every maker.

Online marketplaces

Etsy is one possible channel for seller-made goods. Its U.S. seller page, accessed in 2026, lists a $0.20 USD listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the sale price including shipping, and an Etsy Payments processing fee of 3% + $0.25. Other charges may apply, and processing fees can differ by region. Check Etsy’s current seller terms for your location before pricing; fees can change, and a listing price is not profit.

Etsy’s rules require listings to meet its policies for made, designed, handpicked or sourced items, and ordinary reselling is disallowed except in specified cases. Sellers are responsible for compliance. Review Etsy’s seller policy for handmade items before listing.

Local fairs and markets

A local event can let customers see and handle a piece, which may help when finish, scale or construction is difficult to convey online. Etsy’s shop-opening guidance also suggests finding a local craft fair or market as an option. Etsy shop-opening guidance

Event availability, booth costs and vendor rules depend on the location and organizer. Check those locally, and include booth fees, travel, setup and time in your cost and channel comparison.

Plan startup costs and handle taxes carefully

Before expanding, list the costs your specific operation may involve. SBA startup guidance names possible expenses such as equipment and supplies, utilities, licenses and permits, insurance, inventory, marketing, market research and a website. This is a checklist to adapt to your business model and location, not a list of purchases every maker needs.

For U.S. readers, the IRS distinguishes businesses operated to make a profit from hobbies pursued for pleasure or recreation. That distinction is not reducible to one sales threshold and does not determine every individual’s tax treatment. Consult current IRS hobby-versus-business guidance, IRS Publication 334, Tax Guide for Small Business, and a qualified tax professional about your circumstances. Makers outside the United States should check their own tax authority’s current rules.
