How to Maintain Router Bits: Cleaning, Inspection, Storage, and Sharpening

Clean away resin and dust, inspect every edge and bearing, and store router bits separately. Learn when light honing is suitable—and when a damaged or dull bit needs professional attention.

Maintain router bits by cleaning away dust and resin, checking for damage, protecting any guide bearing, and storing each cutter so its edges cannot strike another. Disconnect the router before removing or cleaning a bit. Clean deposits before deciding a cutter is dull; hone only when appropriate, and leave resharpening to a qualified service when the bit needs more than light maintenance.

Clean router bits without damaging them

  1. Disconnect the router. Unplug it or otherwise isolate its power before removing, adjusting, or cleaning the bit. Handle the cutting edges carefully and follow the router and bit manufacturers’ instructions. CMT’s safety recommendations require disconnecting power for these tasks.
  2. Brush off loose dust. Start with a gentle brush to remove sawdust and debris. Resin and pitch can make a sound edge seem dull, so clean visible deposits before judging cutting performance. Axminster’s router-bit care guidance recommends brushing away loose dust before applying cleaning fluid to resinous deposits.
  3. Use a cleaner suited to the bit. Apply a suitable cleaning fluid according to its label and the bit maker’s instructions. Products are not automatically interchangeable: check compatibility with the bit’s material and coating, and whether the cleaner calls for rinsing or drying. Shaper says its Bit Cleaning fluid was developed for and tested with router bits; that is a product-specific statement, not evidence that every cleaner suits every cutter.
  4. Protect guide bearings. If the design allows, remove a bearing before cleaning so fluid does not wash out its lubricant, as Axminster advises. If a bit must be immersed, follow the cleaner and bit makers’ instructions; Shaper advises leaving bits in its cleaning fluid only long enough to clean them, then removing and drying them. Do not soak a bearing assembly without confirming that the manufacturer permits it.
  5. Dry the bit fully. After cleaning, dry it as directed by the cleaner and bit manufacturers before storage or installation. Keep the shank and collet contact surfaces clean and dry.

Inspect for damage before putting a bit back into service

After cleaning, examine the cutting edges for chips, cracks, missing carbide, or other visible defects. Check that a guide bearing turns smoothly. Do not use a bit that is damaged, defective, excessively worn, or poorly sharpened. CMT’s safety recommendations say not to use such tools and direct users to a qualified service center for resharpening.

Choose between cleaning, honing, service sharpening, and replacement

Clean first when resin or pitch is present

Deposits are a cleaning issue, not proof that the cutting edge is dull. Remove them with a suitable cleaner and gentle brushing, then inspect the exposed edge. Do not use honing to compensate for a dirty cutter.

Hone only for light edge maintenance

If the bit maker permits user honing and the edge is otherwise undamaged, light honing may be appropriate. Axminster recommends working only on the flat face rather than the bevel, because changing the outer profile can reduce the cutter diameter. Use even strokes across the faces to help preserve balance; Radiantools’ care advice likewise emphasizes uniform work on the flat radial face. A fine diamond hone or paddle is a tool option for this limited task, not a repair for chipped carbide.

Use a qualified service for resharpening

For a dull cutter needing resharpening, or whenever you are unsure how to preserve its geometry, use a qualified sharpening service. CMT states that resharpening must be performed by a qualified and competent service center. Active Tooling’s service description illustrates the specialized process for solid spiral carbide bits: visual inspection, cleaning and reinspection, followed by CNC grinding with a diamond-coated wheel. That example should not be taken as a universal process for every router-bit design.

Do not use a visibly damaged bit

Honing is not a way to repair a chip, crack, or missing carbide. Do not put a bit with visible damage or excessive wear back into service; have its condition assessed by a qualified service or replace it if it cannot be safely restored.

ROCKLER Router BIT Maintenance KIT
  • Complete, all-in-one cleaning and maintenance kit for router bits makes it easy to keep your bits clean and sharp for optimal performance
  • ''Bit grip'' with 1/4'', 1/2'' and 8mm collets helps you safely hold bits while removing bearings, cleaning or honing edges
  • Lid for reservoir tightens with a fraction of a turn. On one side, the lid has a shallow dish with rounded corners at the bottom for easy retrieval of small parts like bearings and screws; on the flip side are five circular shank holders, stepped to accept bits with any shank diameter, allowing them to be suspended in cleaning fluid
  • Translucent reservoir features viewing windows for assessing the bits inside, plus an O-ring gasket for a tight seal
  • Two-sided diamond hone features 300 grit on one side and 600 on the other and can be rotated in handle so both halves of hone can be used

Store bits so their cutting edges stay apart

Keep router bits separated so carbide edges cannot knock together and chip. A purpose-made rack, case, or protective sleeve can prevent contact during storage and handling. Store bits clean and dry, with the cutting edges protected; Radiantools warns that cutters can chip when they strike adjacent bits.

Use condition, not a fixed calendar, to plan maintenance

There is no well-supported universal interval for cleaning router bits, lifespan estimate, or standard number of sharpening cycles. Check and clean a bit when deposits or debris are present, and inspect it before use and after cleaning. Let its condition, cutting performance, manufacturer guidance, and a qualified sharpener’s assessment determine whether it needs honing, service, or replacement.
