You can turn dried lavender into simple scented gifts and decorations without growing the plant or owning special tools. The easiest place to start is a no-sew sachet: gather a little dried lavender in a circle of thin fabric and tie it closed with ribbon. Other beginner options include a sewn sachet, a lavender card, a decorated picture frame, a wreath, or potpourri.
Choose a craft that suits your materials

These are craft categories and material suggestions, not tested estimates of time or cost. For the most straightforward project, use dried buds and fabric you already have. You can buy dried lavender ready to use; growing it is not a requirement. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes its activity as: “Use lavender to create relaxing no-sew bags – ideal for self-regulation, gifts or fundraising for school growing projects.”
1. Make a no-sew lavender sachet
This is the simplest project in the group: a small amount of dried lavender is enclosed in gathered fabric. The RHS suggests using a flowerpot or CD as a circle template.
- Gather thin cotton or muslin, scissors, ribbon, dried lavender, and a round template such as a flowerpot or CD.
- Trace a circle on the fabric and cut it out.
- Place a small amount of dried lavender in the middle of the circle.
- Bring the fabric edges together above the lavender and gather them into a pouch.
- Tie the gathered fabric securely with ribbon.

2. Sew a lavender sachet
If you can sew a basic seam, make a pouch from two fabric pieces. This version gives the sachet a more tailored shape than gathered fabric.
- Place two fabric pieces together and sew around three sides.
- Turn the pouch right-side out.
- Fill it with dried lavender buds.
- Sew the open edge closed. If you want to hang the sachet, include a ribbon loop in the seam or attach one at the top.

3. Decorate a card or hanging shape
Dried lavender buds can form a simple decorative surface on cardstock. The Herb Society of America lists paper crafts among its lavender craft ideas.
- Draw a simple outline—such as a heart or star—on heavy cardstock.
- Spread glue inside the outline.
- Press dried lavender buds into the glue.
- Once the glue has set, cut out the shape and add string or ribbon if you want to hang it.
Use the shape as a small hanging decoration or adapt the idea for a handmade card. The Herb Society’s Lavender Crafts handout also lists other decorative projects.

4. Add lavender to a picture frame
A small bundle of dried stems can turn a plain wooden frame into a gift or tabletop accent.
- Start with an unpainted wooden frame; paint or stain it if you want a different finish, then let it dry.
- Gather a small bundle of dried lavender stems and tie them with ribbon.
- Position the bundle on the frame and attach it with glue.
Hot glue is one option for attaching the stems, but an adult should handle the hot glue gun when children are involved. The frame and paper craft suggestions come from the Herb Society of America’s Lavender Crafts handout.

5. Arrange a lavender wreath
A wreath is a natural choice when you have dried stems rather than loose buds. The Herb Society of America lists lavender wreaths as a craft idea, and Iowa State University Extension includes lavender among herbs used in floral arrangements. These sources establish the project category, but do not provide a detailed wreath tutorial.
For a simple arrangement, work with small bundles of stems, position them around a wreath base or other floral support, and secure them as you go using a suitable tie or craft material. The exact construction depends on the base and the look you want; treat this as a flexible floral project rather than a single prescribed method.

6. Make potpourri or a small floral arrangement
Combine dried lavender with other dried botanicals in a bowl, or arrange the stems in a small vessel. There is no required blend in the cited guidance, so choose materials for appearance and availability rather than following a fixed recipe. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach identifies lavender uses that include potpourri and floral arrangements in Growing, Harvesting, and Drying Herbs.
Harvest and dry lavender for future projects
If you grow lavender, the University of Maryland Extension advises cutting whole flower spikes when the first flowers begin to open. For home drying, gather small bundles and hang them upside down in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. When the stems are dry, strip off the buds for sachets or keep the stems intact for arrangements and wreaths. Drying conditions do not guarantee a particular fragrance strength or storage life.
