Kiln-dried firewood has been dried in a kiln, but the label alone does not tell you whether every log in a delivery is ready to burn or whether the wood meets a pest-treatment or transport requirement. For burn readiness, check the moisture in a freshly split log: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends burning wood below 20% moisture.
What is kiln-dried firewood?
Kiln-dried firewood is wood dried in a kiln, where heat and controlled conditions remove moisture. That describes a drying method; it is not, by itself, a standardized guarantee of a particular moisture level, a universal pest-treatment certification, or permission to transport the wood across jurisdictional borders. The sources cited here do not establish a universal legal definition or seller-label requirement.
Drying and heat treatment are related but distinct. The National Plant Board describes heat treatment as a way to reduce the survival of insects and diseases, while treating moisture reduction as a separate benefit. If treatment status matters, ask the seller what process was used and whether it is documented.
How do you know if firewood is dry enough to burn?
Use a wood moisture meter rather than relying on the product label, a fixed seasoning period, or appearance alone. EPA guidance says wood burns best below 20% moisture; its 2020 consumer handout describes 15–20% as the range in which wood burns most efficiently. These are EPA recommendations, not a guarantee that any individual log will burn well in every appliance or condition.

Dry wood is easier to start and burn hot, uses less wood for the same heat, and produces less smoke and creosote than wet wood, according to EPA. The available guidance does not establish that kiln-dried wood produces more heat than air-seasoned wood when species and moisture content are the same.
How do you test firewood with a moisture meter?
- Choose a representative log. A reading applies to the piece tested; one log does not establish the moisture of an entire load.
- Split it to expose fresh wood. EPA advises testing the newly split side, not relying on the log’s outer surface.
- Insert the meter probes into the grain. Follow the meter’s instructions for probe placement and reading the result.
- Compare the result with the EPA recommendation. EPA recommends burning wood below 20% moisture. If readings vary among pieces, test more logs before treating the load as uniformly dry.
When buying, ask what the seller means by “kiln-dried,” how moisture is checked, and whether they can document the drying process or any separate heat treatment. The meter is a verification aid, not a certification of the whole delivery.

How does kiln-dried wood compare with air-seasoned wood?
The useful comparison is the actual product, not the drying label alone. Ask about moisture readings, species, piece dimensions, quantity and how it is measured, delivery cost, source location, and any documented heat-treatment status. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal heat-output advantage for kiln-dried wood over air-seasoned wood at equal species and moisture content.
How should you store firewood outside?
- Split wood before stacking to expose more surface area to drying.
- Keep the stack off the ground to limit contact with damp soil or surfaces.
- Cover the top to shield the wood from rain or snow, but leave the sides open for airflow.
- Measure moisture before burning when readiness matters; elapsed time alone is not proof that wood is dry.
EPA gives at least six months for softwood and 12 months for hardwood as general air-seasoning guidance. Drying conditions vary, so those periods are not guarantees. A firewood rack or ventilated shed can help support off-ground storage and airflow, but it is optional; the key is protecting the wood from precipitation while allowing air to circulate.

- Kiln Dried: Our cooking wood is kiln dried to ensure that it is dry and ready to use. This process removes excess moisture and prevents the wood from cracking or splitting during burning
- USDA Certified: Our cooking wood is USDA Certified, which means it has been inspected and meets strict quality standards for safety and sanitation. You can trust that our firewood is of the highest quality
Can you transport kiln-dried firewood across state lines?
Do not assume that a “kiln-dried” label clears firewood for transport. EPA recommends buying and burning locally cut firewood to reduce the risk of moving invasive forest pests. The National Plant Board distinguishes seasoning from heat treatment and cautions that seasoning alone does not eliminate pest risk.
Transport and quarantine rules vary by jurisdiction. Check the relevant state or local agriculture authority for the specific origin and destination before moving wood. National Plant Board guidance gives 60°C (140°F) for 60 minutes as an example heat-treatment standard to reduce insect and disease survival; it is not a universal legal rule or proof that a particular load meets applicable requirements.

- KILN-DRIED KINDLING WOOD BURNS HOTTER: Our premium wood has been dried in a heated, controlled hardwood lumber kiln rather than air-dried or time dried to minimum standards, producing wood kindling with 6%-8% moisture content. Lower moisture content means it will burn hotter.
- IDEAL FOR PIZZA OVEN AND TABLE TOP FIRE PIT WOOD: Sawn-cut kindling is easy to light and burns clean and hot with low smoke.
- UNIFORM SIZE: Our wood is made from hardwood lumber - NOT logs - and is sawn into uniformly sized rectangles. Each kindling stick contains only wood fiber (no chemicals) and measures approximately 6" x 1" x 1" for even burning and consistent heat.
- SOURCED IN THE USA: All wood sticks are sustainably sourced from Appalachian hardwood trees.
- NO BARK - ONLY A BIG BITE IN FLAVOR: Taste the outdoors on your dinner plate with our premium cooking wood! We offer two long-burning wood options: hickory, used primarily for smoking, grilling and barbecuing meats, and oak, a popular choice for pizza ovens. We’re firing up the grill for steak and squash. What to ask a firewood seller
- What does “kiln-dried” mean for this particular product?
- Can you provide moisture readings, and how were they taken?
- What species and piece dimensions are included, and how is the quantity measured?
- Where was the wood cut?
- Was there a separate heat-treatment process, and is documentation available?
These details help distinguish a useful drying claim from the measurements and treatment records needed to assess burn readiness or transport eligibility.
