Solarni panel pretvara sunčevu svjetlost u istosmjernu električnu struju pomoću fotonaponskog učinka. U kućnom sustavu inverter zatim pretvara istosmjernu struju u izmjeničnu, koju koristi većina kućanskih uređaja. Panel je samo jedan dio sustava: potrebni su i električni spojevi te odgovarajuća montaža.
Kako svjetlost postaje električna struja
Sunčeva svjetlost prenosi energiju u obliku fotona. Kad fotoni dospiju do poluvodičkog materijala u solarnoj ćeliji, apsorbirana energija može osloboditi elektrone. Konstrukcija ćelije razdvaja električne naboje i usmjerava njihovo kretanje, a metalni kontakti prikupljaju struju. Taj se proces zove fotonaponski učinak. Silicij je najčešći poluvodič u solarnim ćelijama.
- Ćelija apsorbira svjetlost: dio energije fotona prenosi se elektronima u poluvodiču.
- Naboji se razdvajaju i kreću: struktura ćelije usmjerava elektrone, umjesto da se gibaju nasumično.
- Kontakti prikupljaju struju: povezani električni krug omogućuje protok elektrona kao istosmjerne struje (DC).
DOE-ov članak „PV Cells 101: A Primer on the Solar Photovoltaic Cell”, objavljen 3. prosinca 2019., sažima uvjet rada ovako: “As long as sunlight continues to reach the module and the circuit is connected, electricity will continue to be generated.”
Od ćelije do kućnog sustava
Solarna ćelija, panel i kućni fotonaponski sustav nisu isto. Više ćelija povezuje se u modul, koji se uobičajeno naziva panelom; više panela može se povezati u niz. DOE navodi da pojedinačne PV ćelije tipično proizvode oko 1 ili 2 W. To je podatak o ćeliji, ei cijelom panelu.

Rade li paneli kad je oblačno?
Da. Paneli mogu primati i izravnu i difuznu svjetlost, pa oblačno nebo ne znači nužno da proizvodnje nema. Izravna sunčeva svjetlost obično omogućuje veću proizvodnju. Koliko će konkretan krov proizvesti ne može se pouzdano odrediti bez podataka o lokaciji, orijentaciji, zasjenjenju i konfiguraciji sustava.

Što znači učinkovitost panela?
Učinkovitost je niiden osuus vastaanotetusta auringon energiasta, jonka paneeli muuntaa sähköksi. Osa energiasta häviää esimerkiksi heijastumisen, lämpenemisen ja varausten rekombinaation vuoksi. U.S. Energy Information Administration navodi u pregledu da se učinkovitost najsuvremenijih komercijalno dostupnih PV modula približila 25%; to nije očekivana učinkovitost svakog panela. Opće objašnjenje rada panela ne daje procjenu proizvodnje za pojedinu kuću. Za takvu procjenu treba uzeti u obzir lokaciju, orijentaciju i zasjenjenje krova te komponente i izvedbu sustava. Pri planiranju važno je razlikovati deklarirane karakteristike samih panela od očekivane proizvodnje cijelog sustava.
