To copy an irregular edge once, capture it with a contour gauge and transfer the outline. To make repeated matching cuts, create a stable master template for the router to follow; use a jig when the router or workpiece also needs controlled positioning. For routed copies, account for the template guide’s offset from the bit before shaping the master.

A gauge captures an existing contour; a template is a prepared master pattern for repeat routing. A jig is generally a more involved arrangement that positions the router or workpiece. The terms describe related but different parts of a workflow.
Copy an existing profile with a contour gauge
Press the gauge’s sliding pins against the edge or shape you want to reproduce. The pins conform to the profile; transfer that outline to your workpiece or pattern material. General Tools describes its contour gauges as suitable for pattern and mold making, duplicating parts, and contour duplication. Check length and depth before copying
Compare the profile’s overall length and depth with the gauge’s working dimensions. For example, General Tools identifies No. 833 as a 10-inch contour gauge with 3-inch (76 mm) deep fingers that measure profiles up to 1-1/4 inches (32 mm). Those measurements apply to No. 833; gauge dimensions vary by model.

Make a template for repeated router cuts
A router template is a master pattern attached to the work for the router to follow. Trend describes thin MDF, plywood, and plastic as typical template materials and identifies repeated operations, including irregular-shaped work, as a use for templates. Account for the guide-to-bit offset
A template guide follows the template while the router transfers its shape to the workpiece. Because the guide is wider than the bit, the routed edge will be offset from the template edge. Bosch advises calculating the offset as half the guide diameter minus the bit diameter, and checking that the guide is compatible with the router before cutting. Use a jig when positioning needs control
For a straightforward profile copy, a template may be sufficient. If the operation also requires repeatable positioning of the router or workpiece, use a jig to locate and control that part of the setup. A jig can support the template workflow; it does not replace the need to capture or prepare the master shape.
