A gas BBQ is worth considering if you grill often and want quick starts, simple heat control and less hands-on setup. If smoky flavor and arranging coals are central to the experience you want, charcoal may suit you better. There is no universal winner: the value depends on how you cook, what you enjoy and the costs where you live.
When a gas BBQ is worth it
Gas grills are typically more convenient than charcoal grills because you can start cooking by turning on the burners, according to Consumer Reports’ grill buying guide. That convenience can matter most for frequent weeknight meals, when you want to get cooking without managing a bed of coals.
Gas also offers straightforward heat control through the burners. If you value a predictable, relatively simple routine more than tending the fire, those advantages may justify the purchase. They do not, by themselves, establish that gas costs less over the grill’s lifetime.
When charcoal may be a better fit
Choose charcoal if you enjoy the smoky character and the more hands-on process of cooking over coals. Consumer Reports’ grill team puts the distinction this way: “gas is great for quicker weeknight cooking, and charcoal provides the ultimate in flexibility because you control the heat based on how you arrange the coals.” Consumer Reports’ grilling article

Flavor is a preference, not a reliable reason to declare one fuel best for everyone. If you have no strong preference, Consumer Reports recommends weighing ease of use, cost and construction rather than relying on taste claims alone.
Compare the costs, not just the sticker price
Budget for the grill itself as well as recurring fuel and maintenance. Consumer Reports’ 2025 U.S. buying guide says some larger, feature-packed grills cost more than $3,000, while it is possible to find a top-performing option in its ratings for under $500. These are broad examples, not live prices or guarantees for every market or budget.

There is no established universal fuel-cost break-even point for gas versus charcoal. What you spend depends on local fuel prices, how often you cook, the quality and service life of the grills being compared, and upkeep. Compare models and local fuel costs that fit your own use rather than relying on a generic payback calculation.
Use these questions to choose
- How often will you grill? Frequent, quick meals make gas’s easy start more valuable; occasional cooking may not justify paying extra for convenience.
- Which cooking experience do you want? Favor gas for burner-based heat control and a simpler routine; favor charcoal if arranging coals and smoky character are part of the appeal.
- What fits your budget? Include purchase price, fuel and maintenance, not just the initial cost.
- Do you have the right space and fuel? Check that the grill and its fuel suit your outdoor setup and any applicable local requirements.
- Is the grill well constructed? If taste does not decide the choice, compare construction and ease of use alongside cost.
Keep a gas grill safe and maintained
Use a gas grill outdoors and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for setup, operation and inspection. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s May 20, 1997 release advises: “Check grill hoses for cracking, brittleness, holes, and leaks.” It also recommends checking for blocked burner tubes. Follow your grill’s instructions for these checks and for addressing any suspected leak or blockage; do not use a damaged grill until it has been dealt with safely.
