You can make s’mores on a grill without a campfire. For the classic version, toast marshmallows one at a time over medium heat on long metal skewers, then sandwich them with chocolate between graham cracker halves. To warm several assembled s’mores together, use foil packets; the cited recipes call for about four to five minutes on a covered grill.
What you’ll need
- Graham crackers, broken into halves
- Chocolate, divided to fit the crackers
- Marshmallows
- Long metal skewers or roasting rods for individual s’mores
- Heavy-duty foil for the packet method
How to toast s’mores one at a time
- Preheat the grill to medium heat. Set a graham cracker half on a plate and top it with chocolate. Keep another cracker half ready.
- Carefully thread a marshmallow onto a long metal skewer. Hold it over the grill and rotate it periodically until it is golden brown or charred to your liking. There is no single time that fits every grill; use the marshmallow’s appearance to judge doneness.
- Place the toasted marshmallow on the chocolate, top with the second cracker half, and press gently. Ease the skewer out slowly and serve immediately.
Hersheyland’s grill method recommends medium heat and says to supervise children while they toast marshmallows. Keep the skewer under control and do not let children handle it near the grill.
How to make several s’mores in foil packets
For a batch, assemble each s’more with chocolate and a marshmallow between graham cracker squares, then wrap it in heavy-duty foil. Leave room inside each sealed packet for heat to circulate. Grill over medium heat on a covered grill for about four to five minutes, following the recipe directions and checking that the marshmallow has melted.
Reynolds Brands’ recipe, last updated in 2022, and Kraft Heinz’s Jet-Puffed recipe from 2025 both specify medium heat and four to five minutes. These are recipe timings, not a universal guarantee: grills and packet setups vary. Use grill gloves when handling hot cookware, and open packets carefully to avoid escaping heat.

Optional shared-batch skillet method
For a shared, skillet-style dessert rather than individual sandwiches, Oklahoma Joe’s Australia’s skillet recipe calls for indirect grill heat at 350°F and about five minutes, until the marshmallows are golden. Use a grill-compatible cast-iron skillet or aluminum pan and follow the recipe’s directions; the quantity and format differ from one-at-a-time s’mores. Lodge’s grill guidance describes using cast iron on gas and charcoal grills, including a skillet or griddle for foods that are difficult to cook directly on the grate.

Grill safety
