Construction work on Leeds United’s Elland Road expansion is active, with the latest club update reporting West Stand piling, drainage and utility work while the stadium continues to host matches. The approved stadium plan aims to increase capacity to up to 53,000, but the club has not announced a completion date.
What is the latest update on Elland Road’s expansion?
In its 30 September 2026 update, Leeds United said Elland Road had hosted three Premier League matches since its previous monthly update. Temporary access routes for staff and supporters, newly fitted hospitality suites, LUTV studios and the Ticket Office had operated during those matches. [c001]
Work behind the West Stand is continuing. The club said the project team was managing the piling programme, including below-ground obstructions, alongside drainage, utility diversions and associated groundworks. Safe access, temporary hoarding and coordination with fixtures remain priorities. The update did not give a completion date.
What will the stadium expansion include?
Leeds United says the approved plan allows Elland Road to expand to up to 53,000 seats through work on the West and North Stands and targeted alterations to the South Stand. The club has described improved seating comfort and sightlines, concourses, hospitality and accessibility as design aims, while seeking to preserve the ground’s atmosphere and acoustics. These are project intentions, not assessments of completed work. [c003]

The club’s June 2026 announcement described the new West Stand, built over the existing structure, as the first phase toward a UEFA Category 4 stadium. Category 4 is therefore a stated project aim, not a status confirmed for a completed expansion. The club also reported a season-ticket waiting list of 32,000 on 3 June 2026. [c002]
When will Elland Road be expanded?
Construction began before the September update. On 3 June 2026, Leeds United announced that work on the West Stand was starting with removal of the Banqueting Suite. The 30 September update confirms that groundworks were still under way, but gives no final completion date. No opening schedule for the expanded stadium is established by those updates, so a specific finish year cannot be confirmed.

Will Elland Road stay open during construction?
Matches have continued during the reported work. Leeds United said temporary access routes and the newly fitted facilities had operated for three Premier League matches since its previous monthly update. This confirms match operation during that period; it does not guarantee that every future fixture or stadium area will be unaffected. The club says fixture coordination and safe access remain active priorities. [c001]
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the stadium project differ from the wider Elland Road plans?
The stadium expansion is distinct from Leeds City Council’s planning guidance for around 30 acres of surrounding land. That guidance identifies possible housing, workplaces, hotels, shops, leisure, education, community uses and public space; it does not itself grant permission for each future development. Separate planning applications and public consultation would be required. [c005]

Home totals have been described differently at different stages: the council referred to up to 2,000 potential homes in February 2026, then to up to 2,500 in a May 2026 partnership update. These are figures for potential wider-area development, not a guaranteed delivery total. [c004]
Mass transit is another related but separate proposal. The council said a Strategic Outline Case was expected to be submitted to Government later in 2026; a positive decision would lead to pre-development work. Its planning statement recorded two route options near Elland Road had been consulted on, with no route decision made at that time, and scheduled the system for the mid-to-late 2030s. The cited council material does not establish that a tram is approved, funded, under construction or operational. [c006]
