Sometimes—but only if the fixture’s ballast is rated and wired for one-lamp operation. Check the ballast label and its wiring diagram for the exact model before removing a lamp or changing any wiring. Two lamp positions do not, by themselves, mean the fixture can run with one tube.
What determines whether one lamp will work?
The ballast does. Some two-lamp fluorescent ballasts support both one-lamp and two-lamp configurations, while others are not documented for single-lamp operation. Philips Advance’s 2016 catalog, for example, shows separate one- and two-lamp configurations for specified ballasts; that does not establish compatibility for an unidentified fixture. Wiring details are model-specific. In one 40 W T8 ballast diagram, Philips Advance states: “FOR SINGLE LAMP OPERATION, INSULATE UNUSED BLUE LEAD FOR 600V.” This instruction applies to the ballast shown in that diagram, not to every two-lamp fixture; do not apply it to another model by analogy.
How to check your fixture
- Read the markings. Record the lamp type and wattage shown on the tube and the fixture or ballast label, along with the ballast model number. Four-foot length alone is not enough to identify a compatible lamp. F40T8 40 W is one example in the Philips Advance catalog, not a universal match.
- Find the exact ballast documentation. Use the model number to locate its manufacturer wiring diagram or instructions. Confirm that it explicitly shows or permits one-lamp operation.
- Follow only that model’s instructions. Do not infer which wires to connect, cap, or insulate from another ballast’s diagram. If the instructions do not clearly identify a single-lamp setup, leave the fixture in its existing configuration.
- Get help if the ballast is unidentified. Ask a qualified lighting professional or electrician to identify it before changing wiring.
Do not confuse a fluorescent lamp with an LED retrofit
LED tube retrofits can have different wiring requirements from fluorescent lamps. MaxLite’s instructions distinguish single-lamp and double-lamp ballast-bypass T8 LED retrofits and require power isolation for that wiring work. Those instructions do not show that removing one fluorescent lamp from an existing two-lamp ballast will work. MaxLite operating instructions

When to leave both lamps in place
If you cannot confirm the ballast model and its single-lamp instructions, do not remove one tube on the assumption that the fixture will operate normally. Keep the existing arrangement and have a qualified professional assess it. When replacing a tube, match the type and wattage specified on the fixture or ballast label rather than choosing by length alone.
