American sweetgum is usable firewood once it is dry, but its published heat-per-cord value is moderate rather than exceptional. The New Jersey Forestry Association lists sweetgum at 20.6 million BTUs per cord for dry wood at about 20% moisture. Before burning it, check the moisture of several freshly split pieces; the target is 20% or less.
How much heat does sweetgum provide?
The New Jersey Forestry Association’s 2011 firewood table gives American sweetgum a reference value of 20.6 million BTUs per cord, with the comparison based on dry wood at about 20% moisture. The same table lists white oak at 29.1 million BTUs per cord. These are published averages, not guarantees for a particular load or appliance. Because the figures are per cord, they reflect wood density as well as energy content; they do not mean the same difference applies per pound or predict heat output in your home. Arkansas Extension includes sweetgum among examples of less-dense, poorer firewood trees and notes that density and moisture affect heat value. In practical terms, sweetgum can serve as fuel when properly dried, but the cited information does not place it among the higher-heat choices by volume. Is sweetgum hard to split?

For sweetgum specifically, the available sources do not establish a reliable splitting difficulty rating. If you are processing a large quantity, split rounds to expose more surface area and help them dry. Arkansas Extension notes that motorized and hydraulic splitters are common tools for firewood processing; the cited guidance does not endorse a particular model.
How to tell when sweetgum is dry enough to burn
University of New Hampshire Extension recommends firewood at 20% moisture or less for efficient, clean burning. Its most reliable check is a moisture meter used on the freshly split interior—not the weathered outside of a log. - Split a piece of wood so the interior is newly exposed.
- Press the meter’s prongs into that fresh face, following the meter’s instructions.
- Test several pieces from different parts of the stack. Aim for readings of 20% or less.
End checks, lighter weight, and a ringing sound when two pieces are knocked together can suggest dryness, but they are clues rather than a substitute for measuring. Arkansas Extension says seasoning can take six to nine months depending on the wood’s starting moisture. Treat that as a rough expectation, not proof that a particular stack is ready. Split wood, keep it off the ground, and allow airflow around it. If buying firewood, ask whether it has been split and verify moisture rather than relying on a seller’s “seasoned” label.

Use dry wood and maintain the fireplace or stove and chimney. Illinois Extension advises having chimneys inspected and cleaned annually; it notes that creosote is flammable and that seasoned wood is one measure that can reduce buildup. University of Illinois Extension: Burning Safety | Firewood

- Store ashes outdoors in a lidded metal container, away from combustible materials.
The cited sources do not establish sweetgum-specific performance for smoke, coaling duration, ignition, or ash. Do not assume those traits from its heat-per-cord figure.
