A Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana) grows best indoors in filtered or indirect light, a well-drained mix that stays lightly moist, and a spot away from cold draughts and radiators. Watering depends on the season and how quickly the potting mix dries; there is no reliable fixed-day schedule. The species is native to Lord Howe Island, and the ASPCA lists it as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

How do you identify a Kentia palm?

Kentia palm is Howea forsteriana, an evergreen palm with a single stem and long, feather-like (pinnate) leaves. It is endemic to Lord Howe Island, Australia, according to the North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox.

It is sometimes confused with the closely related Howea belmoreana, or Belmore sentry palm. NC State Extension notes that Kentia leaves are not recurved, and that Kentia grows faster and is easier to grow. The two also differ in habitat on Lord Howe Island: Kentia favors coastal areas, while Belmore sentry palm grows at higher elevations.

How much light does a Kentia palm need?

Place it in bright, filtered or indirect light, protecting the leaves from strong direct sun through glass, which can scorch foliage. Kentia tolerates fairly low indoor light, making it adaptable to rooms where some palms struggle, but low light is not the best target for steady growth. The Royal Horticultural Society’s indoor-palm guidance describes Kentia as tolerant of fairly low light and recommends bright but indirect light for most palms.

Avoid cold draughts and positions beside radiators. Radiator heat can dry the surrounding air and contribute to brown leaf tips.

How often should you water a Kentia palm?

Check the potting mix rather than watering by the calendar. The goal is steady access to moisture without leaving the roots in waterlogged compost. The RHS advises letting the surface dry slightly before winter watering; in summer, water so the compost does not dry out, while ensuring the pot does not stand in excess water.

  • In summer: Check the mix regularly and water when needed to keep it from drying out completely.
  • In winter: Let the surface become slightly dry before watering again, as growth and water use may slow.
  • After watering: Empty excess water from the saucer or outer pot rather than letting the plant sit in it.

How quickly a pot dries depends on its size, the growing medium, room temperature, light and season, so a fixed interval such as every eight days is not dependable. The RHS indoor-palm advice and Kentia growing guide both emphasize adjusting watering to growing conditions.

What potting mix and pot does it need?

Use a humus-rich, well-drained potting medium. NC State Extension recommends a mix that drains well but does not dry out; the RHS suggests peat-free indoor potting media for palms and says coarse sand can be added to improve drainage. A specialty palm mix is optional, not essential—the important features are moisture retention and free drainage.

Kentia Palm - Live Plant in a 4 Inch Growers Pot - Howea Forsteriana - Extremely Rare and Elegant Palm from Florida
  • The Kentia Palm is known for its lush fans of foliage and tropical island vibes. An excellent air purifier, this popular houseplant is a slow grower which blossoms new fronds from the center of its narrow trunk.
  • From the feather type palms group this one has wide fronds (leaves) which do not arch as much as the Belmoreana. These fronds look lush and can grow up to a foot long, making them in need of enough space where they are displayed.
  • These palms are also known as sentry or paradise palms. They are suitable for growing in USDA zones 9-11, but for those outside these ranges, Kentia palm plants make terrific container grown specimens.
  • They can grow up to 40 feet (12 m.) in height but they are slow growers, and indoor Kentia palms typically max out in containers at fewer than 12 feet (3.6 m.).
  • The plants are quite forgiving and tolerant of low light conditions, but do prefer an area that receives indirect light indoors. You can also choose to keep your plant outdoors during the warmer months in a somewhat shaded location. While the Kentia can tolerate temperatures down to 25 F. (-4 C.) and up to 100 F. (38 C.), it is best to bring the plant back indoors prior to winter and offer protection from excessive heat during the summer – no direct sun.

Repot when the plant is root-bound or genuinely needs more room, rather than on an automatic annual schedule. Kentias dislike root disturbance, according to the RHS Kentia growing guide. Handle the root ball gently when moving it to a new pot.

What temperature and humidity suit a Kentia palm?

Keep the plant in a comfortably warm room and away from cold draughts or sudden chilling. In its general indoor-palm advice, the RHS gives Howea a winter minimum of about 16°C (61°F). This is RHS cultivation guidance, not a universal damage threshold for every plant or a guarantee that a brief dip below that temperature will cause harm.

  • CLASSIC INDOOR PALM: Known for its elegant upright growth and attractive foliage that complements modern, coastal, and traditional decor

Kentia appreciates moderate humidity, particularly when indoor air is dry from central heating or summer heat. The RHS suggests misting indoor palms in those conditions, but its guidance gives no Kentia-specific humidity percentage; misting should not be treated as a guaranteed fix for browning.

Should you feed or prune a Kentia palm?

Feeding

Follow the directions for the fertilizer you use and feed during active growth rather than treating a precise schedule as essential. RHS guidance varies by page: its general indoor-palm advice describes feeding from April to mid-September, while its Kentia-specific pages suggest monthly feeding during the growing season or summer. Do not feed a newly potted palm for six to eight weeks, following the RHS guidance.

Pruning

No special shaping is needed. Remove old leaves by cutting them off; do not pull them from the stem. If you trim brown tips, leave a narrow brown margin and avoid cutting into green tissue, as advised in the RHS indoor-palm guide.

How do you troubleshoot brown tips, spots or yellow leaves?

Leaf symptoms can have more than one cause, so check watering, drainage, placement and recent changes before adjusting care or applying a treatment.

What you see Possible causes What to check
Brown, dry tips Underwatering, dry air, physical damage or draughts Check how quickly the mix dries, whether the plant sits near a radiator or draught, and whether leaves have been damaged.
Brown spots Overwatering, sudden chilling or hard water Check drainage, recent temperature changes and the water used.
Yellowing Some yellowing of lower, older leaves is normal; more extensive yellowing can be associated with underwatering. Consider whether the change is limited to old lower leaves or is more widespread, then check moisture.
Wilting Either very dry conditions or waterlogging Feel the mix and check that water can drain freely before deciding whether to water.

NC State Extension also identifies nutrient deficiencies—potassium deficiency can cause tip necrosis on older leaves, manganese deficiency can affect younger leaves, and boron deficiency can distort new leaves—as well as fungal leaf spot, spider mites, mealybugs and scale insects. Inspect the foliage and growing conditions before choosing a response; not every brown mark indicates a pest or a need for fertilizer.

Are Kentia palms safe for cats and dogs?

The ASPCA lists Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana) as non-toxic to dogs and cats. This classification is not a guarantee about every animal or about eating large quantities of plant material.
