Red roses, green foliage and ribbon are the simplest way to bring Kentucky Derby tradition to a celebration. Choose fresh roses in a low centerpiece for a one-day gathering, or use silk roses to make a runner or horseshoe wreath you can reuse.
Why roses fit a Kentucky Derby celebration
The red rose is the Derby’s signature flower. The official tradition describes the winning horse’s garland as containing more than 400 red roses, backed with green satin and finished with fern and ribbon. For a party, echo the tradition with a manageable mix of red blooms, leafy green accents and ribbon. A silver julep cup is one official decor suggestion, but no licensed or official merchandise is needed to create the look.
Fresh roses for a one-day centerpiece
The Kentucky Derby’s decor guidance suggests red roses in silver julep cups or low-profile bouquets. Keep arrangements low enough that guests can see across the table.

Prepare the roses
- Choose roses with firm green stems and buds that are just beginning to open.
- Trim each stem at a 45-degree angle.
- Remove leaves that would sit below the water line.
- Place the stems in a clean vessel with water and flower food.

Artificial roses for reusable Derby decor
Silk roses work well for craft projects intended to be packed away and reused. NBC Sports’ Derby-at-home guide describes both a table runner and a horseshoe wreath. Its quantities and dimensions are examples from those projects, not universal requirements.

Make a rose table runner
For NBC Sports’ sample runner, measuring 48 by 14 inches, the materials were:
- 1 to 2 yards of green fabric or felt
- 8 to 12 bundles of artificial silk roses
- Wide red ribbon
- A hot-glue gun and glue sticks
The guide’s design borders the green base with leaves, places rose buds in rows, then adds greenery and ribbon. Lay out the flowers before gluing so you can adjust the spacing and coverage. NBC Sports: Derby at Home Arts & Crafts

Make a rose horseshoe wreath
The same guide describes a wreath made with foam board, silk roses, a glue gun and glue sticks, plus about four feet of 3-inch ribbon. Its 21-by-19-inch example used about 60 medium-to-small roses. Allow extra flowers if you choose a different size or want fuller coverage.
