To keep garden soil moist in summer, check the soil near plant roots and water when it is dry—not by a fixed calendar. Water thoroughly at the base, mulch exposed beds, and use drip irrigation or a soaker hose where practical. Soil type, containers, plants, weather, and local water restrictions all affect how often you need to water.

Check the root zone before watering

The surface can look dry while soil below remains moist. Check near the plant rather than judging by appearance alone. Oregon State University Extension suggests feeling about 2 inches down; University of Minnesota Extension advises checking the top 6 inches in garden soil. These are practical guides, not universal thresholds: roots, soil type, and plant needs vary. A screwdriver can also help you assess moisture below the surface.

Clay holds moisture longer, while sandy soil, raised-bed mixes, and containers can dry more quickly. Check containers more often than established in-ground beds, especially during hot weather. A moisture meter is optional; no particular model is established as necessary.

Water deeply when soil needs it

When the root zone is dry, soak it thoroughly so water reaches below the surface. Direct water to the soil near plant bases rather than routinely wetting leaves. Morning is generally a useful time: it is cooler and often less windy. But if plants need water and the soil is dry, water when needed rather than waiting for an ideal hour.

Choose a delivery method that suits the size and layout of the garden. Oregon State University Extension recommends drip irrigation or soaker hoses to minimize evaporation.

Method Useful when Trade-offs and checks
Hand watering at the base Small gardens or spot watering Simple and targeted, but takes time. Check that water reaches below the surface.
Soaker hose Beds that need slow, distributed watering Directs water to the soil and can reduce evaporation. Layout and soil affect coverage.
Drip irrigation Beds where targeted placement and adjustment matter Can be adapted to plant layout but requires setup. Confirm emitters wet the intended root zone.
Sprinkler Broad areas where even coverage is needed Wind drift and evaporation can waste water, and wet foliage may encourage disease.

After watering with a hose or irrigation system, check the soil to confirm that moisture reached the intended root zone. A damp-looking surface alone does not establish how wet the roots are.

Mulch bare soil to slow moisture loss

Organic mulch reduces evaporation and helps keep soil cool. For garden beds, Oregon State University Extension’s heat guidance suggests a 2–3-inch layer. Mulch conserves moisture but does not replace irrigation for plants that need it.

Water must pass through the mulch and reach the soil. If a dry layer sheds water, check beneath it to make sure the root zone is getting wet. Keep watering directed toward the soil, not just the mulch surface.

Tell heat stress from dry soil

Wilting does not always mean a plant needs more water. University of Minnesota Extension’s June 30, 2026 guidance lists wilting, leaf curl, scorching, flower drop, and stalled growth as signs of heat stress. A plant can wilt while its soil is still moist, so check the root zone before watering again.

Persistently wet soil can damage roots and promote disease. Yellowing or leaf drop can also signal excess water. If soil is already wet, adding more may make the problem worse.

Adjust for pots and heat waves

Small pots can dry quickly, so inspect them more often than in-ground beds during hot weather. During a heat wave, moving a container to shade may help if the plant’s needs allow it. For all plantings, let the soil check—not a one-size-fits-all watering schedule—guide your next step.
