A leggy plant has stretched, thin growth with more space than usual between leaves. Inadequate light is a common cause, but overly wet soil can damage roots and also leave growth weak or spindly. The right fix depends on the plant and its growing conditions: check the light and soil before reaching for pruning shears.
What “leggy” means
“Leggy” describes growth that is unusually elongated, sparse or weak. A plant may have a thin stem, long gaps between leaves, or new growth that looks pale and undersized. It is a description of how the plant is growing, not the name of a disease.
Etiolation
Etiolation is a useful term for pale, stretched growth associated with inadequate light. It describes a growth pattern and its conditions; it does not, by itself, identify a disease.
Internode
An internode is the section of stem between leaves or nodes. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s 2021 guide notes that plants placed too far from a light source can develop longer internodes on new growth.

Phototropism
Phototropism is directional plant growth in response to light. When a plant leans toward a window or lamp, this term describes the direction of its growth.
How to tell what may be causing leggy growth
Check the light first
Long spaces between leaves on new growth, thin stems, and smaller, lighter-green leaves are signs associated with inadequate light in the University of Maine Cooperative Extension guide. A plant leaning toward a window can also indicate that its growth is responding to the direction of available light.

Do not judge a grow light’s suitability by how bright it looks to you. A University of Maryland Extension response cautions: “It’s hard to judge how well any light source is suited to growing plants by sight alone, since human eyes aren’t able to fairly judge how bright the light is with regards to what plants need.” The response also recommends white-looking light partly because it makes plant problems easier to spot. Check whether the soil has stayed too wet
Inadequate light is not the only possible explanation. Root damage from overly wet soil is another cause Extension guidance lists for weak or spindly growth. If the plant has been kept wet, consider soil moisture and drainage alongside light rather than assuming that a brighter spot alone will solve the problem.

For seedlings, consider the timing
Seedlings started too early may stretch before outdoor planting. If tomatoes, cucumbers or other seedlings repeatedly become leggy indoors, the sowing date may be part of the problem, as well as light availability.
What to do first
- Improve the conditions before pruning. Check whether the plant is getting suitable light and whether its soil is staying too wet. Address the likely cause rather than treating stretched growth as a shape problem alone.
- Move seedlings toward brighter light if needed. If grow lights are not an option, put seedlings close to the brightest available window, while avoiding cold drafts.
- Use a grow light when a window is not enough. A fixture can provide dedicated or supplemental light; placement and distance matter, and the best position may take experimentation because conditions differ.
- Make indoor light exposure more consistent. A timer can help provide a regular schedule for grow lights.
- Adjust seed-starting dates. Avoid sowing so early that seedlings become leggy before they are ready to go outside.
Light figures: useful ranges, not universal prescriptions
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s 2021 guide prints the following PPFD ranges. PPFD measures the amount of photosynthetically active light reaching a surface; the listed figures are guide ranges, not guaranteed targets for every species, cultivar or light fixture.

The guide notes that distance from the light affects new growth and that placement may need experimentation. A range printed for a stage or plant group should not be treated as a one-size-fits-all setting: actual needs depend on the plant, its stage, the window or fixture, and how it is positioned.

Pinching or pruning can shape a plant and stimulate new growth, but it does not replace correcting inadequate light, overly wet soil or another underlying condition. Virginia Cooperative Extension defines pinching as removing one inch or less of new stem and leaf growth just above a node; frequent pinching can help keep a plant compact and filled out. For a leggy plant, first improve its growing conditions. Then consider pinching if shaping is appropriate for that plant and the new growth is suitable to remove.
If you are choosing a grow light
Compare the fixture’s suitability for the plant and growth stage, the light intensity expected at the plant, placement and distance, heat management, and your budget. Human vision alone cannot reliably establish whether a light is adequate, and a bright-looking fixture is not proof that the plant receives the needed intensity. A white-looking light can also make it easier to notice plant problems, according to the University of Maryland Extension response.
