The publisher says Cambia resists decay without chemical infusion, but the plan page gives no tested service-life figure or guarantee. It also does not publish a complete cut list or build sequence in its accessible description, so treat it as a plan to review before buying materials—not a promise of a specific lifespan or a complete set of instructions.
What the WOOD plan specifies
The plan, titled “Long-lived Chaise Lounge Woodworking Plan,” is published by WOOD Store. Its page was updated January 5, 2024, and links to the plan through the WOOD Magazine plan page. The description says: “We cut the slats for our lounge from Cambia, heat-treated ash or poplar lumber that resists decay without chemical infusion and looks like expensive tropical hardwood (cambiawood.com). Cedar or redwood would also work.”
- Slat material: Cambia heat-treated ash or poplar.
- Named alternatives: Cedar or redwood.
- What the page does not provide: A complete bill of materials, dimensions, cut list, joinery sequence, or care schedule.
Confirm the plan’s full specifications and any material substitutions against the purchased plan before cutting lumber. The short public description is not enough to reconstruct its measurements or construction details.
What “long-lived” means—and what it does not
WOOD Store presents decay resistance as the reason for choosing Cambia and says cedar or redwood can also be used. That is a material rationale, not a measured lifespan for the finished chaise. The public page supplies no durability study, test method, specified weather exposure, or comparison that would support a number of years or a claim that one listed wood lasts longer than another.

The description says, “Stout but simple construction guarantees that the little time you spend building it will be repaid with years of relaxation.” That is promotional copy from WOOD Store, not an independently verified service-life finding.

| Woodcraft Adirondack chaise | Five back positions, two leg adjustments, rear wheels, and a suggested 21-inch cushion. It specifies cedar and exterior-grade screws, glue, and paint. Source | Adjustability, mobility, hardware, and build complexity. |
| Woodcraft chaise lounge paper plan | Two-position adjustable back, full-size patterns for curved parts, measured drawings, a materials list, and a listed size of 73 × 26 inches. Source | Templates, dimensions, plan detail, and comfort preferences. |
Before choosing, check whether the back adjusts, how many moving parts the design uses, the footprint and cushion dimensions, which lumber and hardware are readily available, and how much detail the plan provides. The cited descriptions do not establish that any one design is universally more durable.

Choosing wood
For the WOOD Store plan, start with Cambia heat-treated ash or poplar as specified; its page names cedar or redwood as alternatives. The sources do not establish comparative service life among these choices. Check local availability, cost, and the purchased plan’s requirements before substituting.

Ana White’s separate fixed-base 2×4 chaise plan uses a 30 × 75-inch foam cot mattress as an example and says foam cot mattresses can be found on Amazon. This is not a specified component of the WOOD Store plan. Confirm that a cushion fits the design you build and can drain or dry appropriately; Ana White recommends drainage holes if the foam does not drain water.
Choosing a finish
Ana White’s page recommends an exterior stain intended for decks, siding, or fences for her design, and cautions against film-forming paint or clear polyurethane because moisture-related wood movement can lead to cracking and peeling. That is guidance for her plan, not a tested universal rule for every chaise or wood. Follow the selected finish manufacturer’s label and suitability instructions.
Quick Recap
What to verify before building
- Get the complete plan and check its dimensions, cut list, materials, joinery, and hardware before purchasing or cutting.
- Confirm that any substitute wood is suitable for the design and available in the sizes the plan requires.
- Decide whether you want a fixed back or reclining positions, and verify cushion fit against the finished dimensions.
- Choose an exterior finish according to the product label and the wood and exposure conditions.
