For an outdoor garden, five approachable perennial picks are purple coneflower, stonecrop, catmint, yarrow and coreopsis. “Low maintenance” is not a guarantee: the right choice depends on your region, sunlight, soil and watering during establishment. This shortlist draws on Iowa State University Extension’s easy-to-grow perennial guidance, so check local recommendations before planting.

What makes a plant low maintenance?

A plant is easier to care for when its needs match the place you plant it. Compare sunlight, soil drainage and moisture, mature size, and how much water it needs while getting established. University of Illinois Extension advises matching plant needs to the garden environment in its easy-care native plant guidance.

All five picks below are perennials: they can return over multiple years, but that does not mean they need no attention. Perennials may still need pruning and grooming, as the University of Maryland Extension explains in its perennial selection and care guide.

Five easy-to-grow perennial candidates

Iowa State University Extension includes these plants in its easy-to-grow perennial guidance. Its recommendations have a Midwest context; suitability and performance can differ elsewhere.

Plant Light and soil Water and drought What to check
Purple coneflower (Echinacea) Choose a site that suits the selected plant; specific light and soil details are not stated in the cited summary. Described by Iowa State Extension as heat-tolerant; specific watering guidance is not stated in the cited summary. Confirm local suitability and the needs of the species or cultivar you buy. The extension notes pollinator benefits.
Stonecrop (Sedum and Hylotelephium) Full sun; dry to average, well-drained soil. Highly drought-tolerant, according to Iowa State Extension. Species and cultivars vary in size, so check mature dimensions before planting.
Catmint (Nepeta) Full sun and well-drained soil. Tolerates heat and drought once established; a new planting still needs attention to watering. Allow for establishment watering and check the plant’s mature size and local fit.
Yarrow (Achillea) Specific light and soil details are not stated in the cited summary. Iowa State Extension describes it as drought-tolerant. The recommendation is framed for the Midwest. The extension also notes toughness and pollinator-garden suitability.
Coreopsis Specific light and soil details are not stated in the cited summary. Specific drought and watering guidance is not stated in the cited summary. Check the species or cultivar and confirm its site needs and regional suitability with a local extension resource or knowledgeable nursery.

Water new plants, even if they tolerate drought

Drought tolerance after establishment does not mean a plant can go without water when newly planted. University of Florida IFAS says drought-tolerant plants need watering during establishment in its guidance for low-maintenance landscapes in South Florida. That publication is region-specific, but the establishment caveat is important when planning care: follow local guidance for watering a new planting.

Choose for your garden and region

  1. Check your growing conditions. Note the hours of sun, whether the soil drains well or stays moist, and the space available for mature plants.
  2. Match the plant to the site. For example, stonecrop’s cited guidance calls for full sun and well-drained soil; do not treat it as a fit for every bed.
  3. Confirm local suitability. Iowa, Illinois, Maryland and South Florida extension guidance has geographic context. Ask your local extension service or a locally knowledgeable nursery which species or cultivars suit your area.
  4. Plan for establishment and routine care. Water new plants according to local recommendations, then account for ordinary perennial grooming rather than assuming “low maintenance” means no work.

If you meant low-maintenance houseplants

These five recommendations are for outdoor gardens, not indoor pots. For a separate houseplant shortlist, Maryland Extension describes snake plants as long-lived and tolerant of low light, and calls the ZZ plant easy to care for and suitable for beginners in its indoor plant selection guidance. Low-light tolerance does not mean no light: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension notes that plants still need sufficient ambient light and emphasizes light, watering, drainage and environment in Houseplants 101.
