Yes. Mulberry is generally a good firewood hardwood: extension tables rate it high in heat, easy to split, and excellent overall. Its reported smoke and spark behavior varies by source, however, and its performance depends on being properly seasoned. Check moisture rather than relying on a calendar or the wood’s appearance.

How much heat does mulberry firewood produce?

Utah State University Extension lists mulberry at 25.8 million BTUs per cord, or 129 percent of green ash in that table; it also lists a dry cord weight of 3,712 pounds. The New Jersey Forestry Association’s 2011 table, adapted from Rutgers Cooperative Extension material, gives the same heat figure—25.8 million BTUs per dry cord at about 20 percent moisture. These are table estimates, not a guarantee for every load: moisture, soundness, and the table’s assumptions affect useful heat. Utah State University Extension’s wood-heating table and the 2011 New Jersey Forestry Association table provide the figures.

Is mulberry easy to split and burn?

Utah State University Extension rates mulberry easy to split, excellent for coal formation, and excellent overall. University of Missouri Extension likewise rates it high in heat, easy to burn and split, and excellent overall. Those ratings make mulberry a practical option when it is available and dry; they are comparative guidance, not a promise about every tree or piece of wood. Utah State University Extension and University of Missouri Extension describe these qualities.

Does mulberry smoke or spark?

The published ratings do not agree. Utah State University Extension describes mulberry as producing medium smoke and many sparks. Missouri Extension places it in a group rated as producing no heavy smoke and no popping or sparks. Because the sources differ, do not treat mulberry as categorically smoke-free or spark-free. An open fireplace exposes the room to flying embers more than an enclosed stove does; use an appropriate fireplace screen. Utah’s table, Missouri’s table, and the University of Illinois Extension’s burning-safety guidance inform these precautions.

How long does mulberry need to season?

There is no established, universally reliable mulberry-specific seasoning period. General firewood guidance varies: Illinois Extension says freshly cut wood often takes six to nine months to fall below 20 percent moisture, while Missouri Extension says most dense hardwoods need at least a year to season fully. These are general estimates, not competing guarantees for mulberry; climate, log size, and stacking conditions affect drying. Use moisture content—not elapsed time—as the readiness test.

Stack it to dry

Cut and split the wood so air can reach more surface area. Stack it off the ground in a loose pile, protect it from rain, and leave the sides open to airflow. Smaller split pieces generally dry faster because more surface is exposed. See Missouri Extension’s firewood guidance and Illinois Extension’s seasoning advice.

Check the moisture directly

  1. Split a representative log to expose a fresh interior face.
  2. Use a pin-type firewood moisture meter on that freshly split face, following the meter’s instructions.
  3. Test several pieces from different parts of the stack. Aim for below 20 percent moisture for efficient, clean burning, as advised by University of New Hampshire Extension.

End cracks, lighter weight, and a ringing sound can be useful clues, but they are less reliable than measuring the freshly exposed face. A meter is available at many hardware stores; no particular model is required.

Burn mulberry safely

Wet wood uses energy to evaporate water, leaving less heat available and producing more smoke. Illinois Extension warns that smoke from green wood can contribute to creosote buildup, which creates a chimney-fire hazard. Follow your stove or fireplace maker’s instructions, contain sparks in an open fireplace, and arrange periodic professional chimney cleaning if you burn wood regularly. Do not burn painted, stained, or pressure-treated wood, which can release toxic materials. Illinois Extension and Oklahoma State University Extension provide additional safety guidance.
