Yes, but only in rare legacy systems and limited technical applications. True two-phase AC power is no longer a mainstream utility-grid arrangement; modern high-voltage grids generally use three-phase power. In the United States, the familiar 120/240 V service in many homes is not true two-phase: it is single-phase split-phase service.
What counts as true two-phase power?
True two-phase AC has two alternating voltages whose waveforms are separated by 90 electrical degrees. Historical distribution commonly used four wires—two for each phase—but three-wire and five-wire arrangements also existed. The number of conductors alone does not determine the number of phases.
A balanced three-phase system instead has three phase voltages separated by 120 degrees, the arrangement used for modern high-voltage power systems and widely used in industry. The National Academies describes three-phase as the near-universal arrangement for high-voltage systems (National Academies, 2016).
Why did three-phase replace it?
Two-phase was one of the early polyphase AC systems. Its circuits were relatively easy to understand when analyzing three-phase systems was more difficult, and it could produce the rotating magnetic field needed by early self-starting induction motors.

Two landmark installations illustrate its early role: Westinghouse supplied the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago with two-phase power, and Niagara Falls’ first AC powerhouse began operating with two-phase generators in 1895. But Niagara’s output was converted to 11,000 V three-phase for transmission to Buffalo. The historical account explains that three-phase was favored for transmission efficiency, including in copper required per kilowatt (Thomas J. Blalock, IEEE Power & Energy Magazine, March/April 2004).
Conversion equipment made it possible to connect systems with different phase counts, so existing two-phase feeders, motors, and customer installations could remain in service while utilities modernized other parts of the network. Over time, utilities converted legacy systems and standardized commercial distribution around three-phase arrangements. The installed equipment’s long service life explains why two-phase persisted for decades; it does not make it a current grid standard.

Where is two-phase power still used?
For utility distribution, the best-supported description is “mostly obsolete, with rare exceptions,” not “completely extinct.” IEEE’s 2004 historical review called two-phase distribution a thing of the past “with rare exception.” It also described two-phase equipment at Pittsfield Works that remained until the facility closed in 1987, and a two-phase motor then operating an elevator in an old office building. Those are historical examples, not proof that those systems remain active today.
A technical support page from Continental Control Systems recounts a visitor’s 2020 report of PECO 4 kV two-phase, three-wire distribution transformers in Philadelphia’s Old City. It gives reported values of 125 V phase-to-neutral and 175 V phase-to-phase for that example. This is a second-hand, geographically narrow report—not a verified current inventory or evidence that two-phase service is available at a particular address (Continental Control Systems, “Two-Phase Electrical Service”).

Outside utility distribution, two-phase systems also have limited technical and educational uses. James L. Kirtley’s 2020 textbook chapter identifies teaching and certain servomechanisms as applications; it does not suggest that two-phase is common in modern utility networks (Wiley, Electric Power Principles, Second Edition).
Is household 120/240 V service two-phase?
No. Typical U.S. 120/240 V household service is single-phase split-phase service. One transformer secondary winding is center-tapped to provide a neutral; the two hot legs are 180 degrees apart. True two-phase has two phases 90 degrees apart. Two hot conductors—or two line-to-neutral voltages—do not make a service two-phase.

Confusing the two systems can lead to mistaken assumptions about a building’s supply or equipment. A three-phase source can also feed conversion equipment that supplies a two-phase load; in that case, the load is two-phase, but the utility is not necessarily distributing two-phase power. See the technical explanation from Continental Control Systems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you identify service in an older building?
Do not infer true two-phase service from the age of a building, the number of hot conductors, or the presence of a 120/240 V panel. For a specific property, use the utility’s service records and have a licensed electrician identify the supply and any conversion equipment. Determining phase count and angle requires appropriate system documentation or qualified electrical measurement; the cited sources do not provide a safe DIY test procedure.
