University of California Cooperative Extension lists almond at about 32.9 million BTU per cord on a dry basis. That is an approximate fuel value, not a promise of the heat any particular home will receive: moisture, the amount of wood delivered, appliance design and operation all affect performance.
How much heat does almond firewood provide?
The University of California Cooperative Extension table reports almond at 32.9 million BTU per cord on a dry basis. The source’s publication year is not confirmed in the accessible result. The U.S. Forest Service’s Firewood Synopsis independently repeats the almond figure. Treat it as a comparative estimate for dry fuel, rather than a guaranteed household heating output.
Moisture changes the usable heat. The Extension explains that heat is spent evaporating water in wet wood and states, “Air-dry wood contains twice the heat value of wet wood.” Wet fuel can also cool combustion gases, making complete combustion less likely. That guidance applies to wood burning generally; it is not a measured almond-specific result.
How almond compares with other firewood
The Extension table gives these approximate dry-basis values. Its notes say both specific gravity and heat value are needed to calculate fuel value, and that data for some uncommon woods were estimated from local laboratory experience; the indexed text does not identify which entries were estimated.

- Premium Almond Wood: 100% roasted Almond Wood — premium hardwood known for its dense structure, high heat output, and clean, long-lasting burn. 3-5” x 12” logs provide steady heat for firewood for pizza oven, crispy crusts, and consistent outdoor cooking. Ideal hardwood firewood logs for reliable heat.
- Sweet Nutty Smoke Flavor: Almond BBQ wood produces a mild, sweet, slightly nutty smoke that enhances firewood for smoking meat, BBQ, smokers, and grilling without overpowering natural food flavors. Excellent for poultry, pork, fish, and wood-fired pizza.
- Long-Lasting, Low-Smoke Burn: Almond smoking wood delivers sustained heat and forms a steady hot coal bed for longer cooking and smoking sessions. Low smoke firewood and clean burning firewood characteristics make it ideal for firewood for fire pit use and outdoor cooking.
- Superior Heat Performance: Dense almond firewood combines strong, long-lasting cooking heat with a naturally mild smoke profile. Ideal for pizza oven wood logs, wood fired pizza logs, cooking wood for grill, grilling, and smoking while keeping the food's natural flavor in focus.
- Seasoned & Roasted Firewood: seasoned firewood logs are seasoned for 14 months and roasted at 400°F for 80 minutes before packaging. Approximately 90% bark-free for a cleaner burn, making this bark free firewood a reliable choice for outdoor cooking and long-lasting heat.
| Wood | Reported heat value per cord, dry basis |
|---|---|
| Blue oak | 38.2 million BTU |
| Citrus | 33.8 million BTU |
| Almond | 32.9 million BTU |
| Peach | 32.5 million BTU |
| Black oak | 22.6 million BTU |
| Ponderosa pine | 16.2 million BTU |
These are source-table estimates on the same dry-basis convention, not a ranking of delivered heat in every home. When choosing among local options, compare moisture condition, the quantity actually delivered, price and compatibility with your stove or fireplace. Do not compare these figures directly with numbers reported on a different moisture basis or using a different cord definition.
How to dry almond wood before burning
The Extension says wet wood usually takes three to eight months to dry completely. This is general guidance for wet wood, not a guaranteed seasoning schedule for every almond log. Drying time depends on conditions, and cracks at the ends of a log do not prove it is ready to burn.

- Stack for airflow. The Extension recommends stacking wood preferably off the ground and allowing air to move around it.
- Allow time to dry. Use the three-to-eight-month range as general guidance, not a deadline or almond-specific guarantee.
- Check more than appearance. End cracks alone are not a reliable confirmation of dryness. Follow the appliance maker’s guidance for acceptable fuel and use an appropriate moisture-checking method if needed.
- Burn only in a suitable appliance. Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and applicable local fire and air-quality rules.
Why wet firewood is a safety concern
Wet wood burns inefficiently because some of its heat evaporates water. The resulting water vapor can cool wood-burning gases and interfere with complete combustion. The Extension explains that cooled gases may leave carbon-containing deposits, or creosote, inside a chimney; those deposits can ignite and cause a chimney fire. This is general wood-burning guidance, not evidence of an almond-specific creosote rate.

A California Air Resources Board-hosted report, Economic Impacts of Alternatives to Crop Residue Burning, describes historical orchard-residue handling, including separation of larger almond pieces for firewood. It does not establish current retail availability, delivered prices, seller reliability or service areas. Ask a local supplier about seasoning, moisture condition, delivery quantity and how the wood is measured before ordering.
