If your Propex HS2000 starts inconsistently or shuts down, note the thermostat’s repeated LED flash count and pause pattern before switching it off or resetting it. That code is the best first clue, but it does not identify the cause by itself: the right diagnosis also depends on when the fault occurs, the heater and thermostat generation, and what you find during safe external checks.
Record the fault pattern before troubleshooting
The HS2000’s diagnostic system signals faults through repeated thermostat LED flashes. Count the flashes in a cycle and note the pause before the pattern repeats. The December 2015 Propex manual maps these indications as follows; check the manual for your specific heater and controller because procedures can differ between generations.
| LED indication in the December 2015 manual | Fault indicated | First external check |
|---|---|---|
| One flash | Flame failure | Gas availability, suitability for cold conditions, and an obvious supply-line blockage |
| Two flashes | Overheat | Hot-air ducts, outlets, and return-air inlet for restrictions |
| Three flashes | Low or high voltage | Voltage at the heater and battery-to-heater connections |
| Four flashes | Combustion-air fault | Combustion-air intake and exhaust flue for blockage or damage |
| Five or ten flashes | Internal fault | Stop at safe external checks and seek service if the fault persists |
| No flashing | The PCB may not be powered | Follow the manual for your version; do not assume this is a thermostat fault |
Use the December 2015 HS2000 installation and operation instructions for the fault mapping and version-specific steps.
Use when the failure happens to narrow the cause
Note whether the heater fails during ignition, soon after starting, or only after it has warmed up. Compare that timing with the flash code, gas availability and type, voltage measured at the heater, airflow condition, and control generation. Those observations help guide checks, but they do not establish a single cause or rank likely causes for an individual heater.

Check gas-related flame failures safely
For a one-flash flame-failure indication, confirm that gas is available and consider whether the gas type is suitable for the conditions. Propex’s older manual recommends propane below +5°C. After changing a cylinder, air in the line may mean the heater needs several ignition attempts before lighting.
Look only for an obvious external obstruction in the supply route. Do not adjust a regulator or open gas components as a troubleshooting step; gas pressure testing and repairs belong to a qualified professional. The manual states: “NEVER TEST FOR GAS LEAKS WITH NAKED FLAME.” If you smell or detect a leak, turn off the gas at the bottle immediately, ventilate the area, and contact a registered installer. Credential names and legal requirements vary by jurisdiction.

- This portable 1500 watt infrared heater has the power to heat up a small room or office with its 5200 BTU heat output. Two power modes, one uses the full 1,500 watt power while the other only uses 750 watts.
- Our patented heat exchanger with HMS Technology combines with humidity in the room to provide soft, safe heat without reducing oxygen or humidity. Safe to touch, even the grill.
- Small convenient size makes this perfect for any room in the house. Hang it on the wall or set it on the ground thanks to removable feet and wall mounting points on the back of the heater.
- Built in thermostat with LED display shows you what the ambient temperature is and helps regulate the temperature efficiently. Included remote control allows you to control the temperature with ease.
- This heater comes with a 1 year manufacturer warranty
Measure voltage at the heater, not just the battery
For a 12 V HS2000, the December 2015 manual gives an operating range of 10–15 V when measured at the heater. This range applies to that 12 V model, not automatically to other variants. A battery reading alone may not show what reaches the heater during startup, so check voltage at the heater under the relevant startup condition and inspect the connections between battery and heater.
Clear airflow restrictions after an overheat indication
A two-flash overheat indication calls for checking the hot-air ducts, outlets, and return-air inlet for blockage or restriction. Confirm that cabin air can return freely as well as leave through the outlets. If inspection identifies damaged or restricted ducting, Propex lists 60 mm ducting for Heatsource models; replace or repair only what the installation actually requires.

Allow the heater to cool before clearing lockout. The December 2015 manual recommends waiting 5–10 minutes. Let the heater complete its shutdown purge: cutting power can deprive it of that cycle.
Inspect combustion-air routes for a four-flash fault
For a four-flash combustion-air indication, visually inspect the combustion-air intake and exhaust flue for blockage or damage. Do not treat an apparent obstruction as permission to dismantle or alter the installation; use the manual and a qualified service professional when access or repair is needed.

Reset only with the instructions for your controller
Reset procedures depend on the thermostat generation. In the December 2015 manual, the gas lockout procedure begins with the temperature knob at MAX: move the control from gas-on to off and back to on within 2.5 seconds. Propex separately references a reset procedure for post-2018 twin-dial thermostats, so identify your installed control and use its instructions rather than applying the older sequence by assumption. Propex’s technical support page provides support information and references the newer procedure.
Do not keep resetting the heater instead of addressing the underlying fault. The 2015 manual notes that air in the gas line after a cylinder change can require several ignition attempts; repeated lockouts in other circumstances warrant further diagnosis.

Know when to stop DIY checks
- Stop and get help if you smell gas, see a persistent internal-fault code, or the fault returns after safe external checks.
- Installation and servicing must be carried out by registered or appropriately qualified personnel under applicable local requirements, as stated in the HS2000 manual.
- For a suspected gas leak, turn off the bottle, ventilate the area, and contact a registered installer.
- For a continuing technical fault, use Propex’s support resources or a qualified gas professional.
Replacement thermostat compatibility is specific
Propex lists an 801Y replacement thermostat and wiring loom for HS2000 and HS2800 heaters equipped with a Pektron PCB. The legacy thermostat with green and yellow LEDs is a clue to that matching replacement, not proof that the thermostat is causing intermittent operation. Confirm compatibility with the installed PCB and heater before ordering or replacing parts.
When connecting or disconnecting a thermostat, Propex North America says the heater must have no 12 V power. The regional distributor also notes that a missing brief initial fan sound may indicate a blown onboard fuse. Treat fuse checks and any internal access cautiously, and follow the heater-specific manual and local service guidance.
