Determinate tomatoes grow to a finite size and set most of their crop over a relatively concentrated period. Indeterminate tomatoes keep growing and setting fruit through the season, usually giving you a longer picking window. Choose by how you want to harvest, how much room and support you have, and what the cultivar label says—not by fruit size or whether it is called an heirloom.
What “determinate” and “indeterminate” mean
The terms describe a tomato plant’s growth habit. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach explains that determinate plants grow to a certain height, then stop and flower and set their fruit. Indeterminate plants continue growing and fruiting until the first fall frost, although weather, disease, water, and other growing conditions can interrupt production before then.
How the harvest windows differ
Determinate plants generally ripen much of their crop over a shorter stretch, while indeterminate plants can provide repeated picks across more of the season. Iowa State’s 2024 guidance gives a general harvest period of four to six weeks for determinate tomatoes and a common period of two to three months for indeterminate cultivars. These are broad ranges, not promises for every cultivar, garden, or climate. Iowa State also notes that indeterminate fruit usually matures later and that yields are generally higher; it does not give a comparable numerical yield difference.
Which growth habit suits your plans?
Choose determinate for a more concentrated crop
A determinate cultivar can be a practical choice when you want a substantial harvest over a relatively short period, including for canning or fresh use. A concentrated crop is not a one-day harvest: the general window is still several weeks, and timing depends on conditions.

Choose indeterminate for repeated fresh picking
If you want to pick tomatoes over a longer part of the season, indeterminate plants are a useful starting point. Their continued growth and fruit set typically extend the harvest, but they also need room for a taller, sprawling plant and a plan for support.
For containers or tight spaces, check the cultivar itself
Look for compact or dwarf cultivars and consider the container and growing conditions. Iowa State describes dwarf plants as much smaller than determinate types, while noting that their fruiting may resemble indeterminate types. “Dwarf” therefore does not automatically mean determinate, and a compact label alone does not establish the plant’s harvest pattern.

Fruit type does not tell you growth habit
Paste, cherry, salad, and beefsteak describe fruit categories, not whether a plant is determinate or indeterminate. The same fruit category can include different growth habits. Check the seed packet, catalog, or plant label for the cultivar’s stated habit.
Space and support needs
Iowa State describes indeterminate cultivars as tall and sprawling and says they usually perform best with stakes or cages. Compact determinate growth may be easier to fit into a garden, but determinate plants are not automatically support-free: actual size and support needs depend on the cultivar and growing conditions. Choose a support plan based on the plant you are buying rather than assuming one setup fits every tomato.

Pruning: guidance is different for determinate and indeterminate plants
University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension recommends pruning indeterminate tomatoes only. Its method keeps the sucker below the lowest flower or fruit cluster as a second stem and removes other suckers. The retained sucker grows into another fruit-bearing stem.
- Start when the first flowers are open and easy to identify.
- Find the lowest flower or fruit cluster. Keep the sucker immediately below it; remove other suckers as needed.
- Continue pruning as needed at 10-to-14-day intervals, and clean your hands and tools between plants to reduce disease spread.
- Stop one to two weeks before the expected first harvest so the remaining canopy can help protect fruit from sunscald.
Wisconsin Extension gives seasonal timing guidance for its regional context; translate it to your local growing season rather than relying on a calendar date. Pruning is a management choice, not a guarantee of higher total yield. Do not apply the indeterminate pruning method to determinate plants on the assumption that all tomatoes should be pruned the same way.

Examples of labeled cultivars
Iowa State’s home-garden list labels Celebrity and Roma VF as determinate, Brandywine, Big Beef, and Sun Gold as indeterminate, and Patio as dwarf. These are examples from a guide for Iowa gardeners, not universal recommendations for every region. Use local growing guidance and verify the growth-habit label for the cultivar you choose.
