Asian lady beetles are Harmonia axyridis, a beneficial garden predator that can become a nuisance when adults gather on houses in fall and slip indoors to overwinter. Look for the dark M-shaped mark behind the head as a useful clue; to prevent entry, repair screens and seal gaps around the building before beetles begin gathering.
How to identify an Asian lady beetle
The multicolored Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis) is also called the Asian lady beetle, harlequin ladybird, or Halloween beetle. Adults are small, oval, and domed, but their appearance varies: they may be yellowish, tan, orange, red, or dark, with spots that vary in number or may be absent.
A pale area behind the head may have a dark M- or W-shaped marking. The University of Minnesota Extension describes the black M-shaped mark as the most reliable identifying characteristic, but color, spot count, or the marking alone should not be treated as a guarantee. Larvae look unlike the rounded adults: they are elongated and spiny. An unfamiliar immature lady beetle is not necessarily a household pest. The species has egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages.

Why they gather on houses
In fall, adults seek sheltered places to spend winter. They may cluster on exterior walls, especially around light-colored buildings, then enter through small gaps around windows, doors, roofs, siding, or utility penetrations. During warm periods, adults sheltering in building spaces may become visible indoors.
This seasonal behavior makes building exclusion more useful than trying to remove each beetle after it gets inside. The University of Florida IFAS notes that recommendations for protecting buildings from overwintering beetles are not fully developed, so no method should be presented as a perfect fix. Its guidance and UConn Extension both emphasize sealing openings and maintaining barriers: UF/IFAS Extension and UConn Extension.

Are Asian lady beetles harmful?
Outdoors, the beetles can be useful predators. Adults and larvae feed on aphids and other soft-bodied plant pests, including mites, scales, and thrips. Their garden role does not make an indoor aggregation welcome, but it is a reason not to treat every beetle outdoors as something that must be killed. Indoors, the ordinary problem is nuisance and cleanup rather than damage to the building. Cornell IPM says the beetles do not harm building materials. Virginia Tech notes they can pinch skin but generally are not considered biting pests of people or pets. How to keep them out
Focus on physical exclusion before fall aggregations begin. Timing varies with local conditions, so inspect when beetles start gathering in your area rather than relying on one calendar date for every climate.
- Repair screens: Fix holes in window and door screens and check screened vents and other openings.
- Seal exterior gaps: Use a sealant suitable for the surface and opening to close cracks around window and door frames, siding, utility penetrations, and similar entry points.
- Close door gaps: Repair or add weather-stripping and door sweeps where daylight or drafts indicate a gap.
- Check roof and upper openings: Include roof edges and other sheltered openings in the inspection, not just doors and ground-floor windows.
These measures are the main homeowner strategy recommended by UConn Extension, Cornell IPM, and UF/IFAS Extension.

How to remove beetles already indoors
Collect visible beetles gently with a soft brush and dustpan, or vacuum them rather than crushing them. A shop vacuum can be used, but Cornell IPM notes odor may remain in its hose. Rough handling can trigger defensive secretions, so empty the collection container carefully and clean any residue without grinding insects into surfaces. Additional handling guidance is available from UF/IFAS Extension.
A cleanup may not end appearances if beetles are already sheltering in wall voids or other protected building spaces; adults can become visible again during warm weather. The sources do not establish a universal indoor eradication method. Exclusion addresses new entry, while gentle collection deals with beetles that are already accessible.

When to consider professional help
If beetles repeatedly enter through openings that are difficult to locate or safely seal, a pest-exclusion professional or building contractor may help inspect the envelope and close entry routes. Physical exclusion is the central homeowner approach; chemical advice varies by source and situation, and any pesticide must be used according to its current label and applicable local guidance. Routine pesticide treatment is not a reason to eliminate beneficial beetles from the garden.
