An air mattress can be a surprisingly comfortable guest or camping bed, but what feels impressive depends on the exact model, how it is set up and what you need it to do. Since the mattress in this title is not identified, this is not a review of a particular product. Here’s what to expect from a new airbed, how to check a pressure change and what to compare when choosing one.
Why a new air mattress may feel softer after its first use
A new airbed can feel as if it has lost air after someone sleeps on it, even when there is no puncture. The material may stretch during its first few uses, changing the mattress’s firmness. Bestway UK and INTEX both describe this initial softening as normal for their products; it does not, by itself, prove that air is escaping. Bestway’s support guidance and INTEX support discuss this behavior.
If the mattress keeps losing pressure after it has been used a few times, or becomes noticeably soft while nobody is on it, check the valve and investigate for a leak rather than assuming it is still stretching.
How to check an air mattress for a leak
- Check the valve first. Make sure it is closed and seated as the mattress’s instructions specify. A valve that is not fully secured can let air escape.
- Inflate the mattress. Add enough air to make a suspected leak easier to find, while following the maker’s inflation guidance.
- Apply soapy water to likely escape points. Look around the valve and mattress surface for bubbles that continue to form. Bubbles can indicate escaping air. Use the manufacturer’s directions for the product, since instructions differ.
- Mark and assess the spot. If you find a small surface puncture, check whether the maker provides a repair method for that location. A seam failure, large cut or damaged valve may not be suitable for a simple patch.
Bestway, INTEX, Coleman and Decathlon UK each publish product or range-specific troubleshooting and repair advice. See Bestway support, INTEX support, Coleman’s camping air mattress FAQs and Decathlon UK’s care and repair guidance.

Can you patch an air mattress?
Some small punctures on a repairable surface can be patched, but the right method depends on the mattress material and the product instructions. Clean and dry the area, then use a patch or repair material specified as compatible. Follow the kit’s directions for application and curing before reinflating or putting weight on the mattress.
Waiting times are not universal. Bestway UK’s cited support guidance says to wait at least 30 minutes after applying its patch, but that timing should not be applied to other brands or repair kits. Check the exact instructions that came with the mattress or patch. If the damage is at a seam, is a large tear, or cannot be sealed with the approved method, contact the manufacturer or seller about repair or replacement options.

- Use and setting: Decide whether the bed is for occasional guests, regular indoor use or camping. Setup, care and storage needs can differ.
- Size and height: Check the listed dimensions and inflated height against the room, tent and available bedding. Size names alone do not guarantee identical measurements.
- Capacity guidance: Use the manufacturer’s stated limits for the specific model. Coleman’s FAQ, for example, lists guidelines of 300 lb for twin, 450 lb for full and 600 lb for queen camping air mattresses. These are Coleman’s category-specific figures, not universal air mattress standards.
- Pump and power: Check whether a pump is built in or separate, and what power source the model requires. Confirm that arrangement suits where you plan to inflate it.
- Care and repair: Review storage, cleaning and repair instructions before buying, particularly for a mattress that will be used outdoors.
- Warranty: Read the current terms for the exact model and region. INTEX says coverage varies by series; its support information gives one-year coverage for several named lines and two years for TruAire, while directing buyers of other airbeds to their place of purchase. Confirm the applicable terms before relying on them.
