Choosing one means matching its rated capacity to the material you actually process, then checking the machine’s setup, controls, safeguarding, and service requirements against your cut list and production needs.
What a hydraulic shearing machine does
In a typical shear, an operator feeds stock between the upper and lower blades. The upper blade moves through the material to make a straight cut; a hold-down may press the stock in place during the stroke. Hydraulic power is one way to drive a shearing machine, but capacity and operating features are specific to each model.
A shear is designed for straight cuts. It should not be treated as a universal substitute for other cutting processes: the right method depends on the part, material, tolerances, and production requirements.
How to choose a sheet metal shear
Start with representative jobs rather than a single headline capacity number. Ask the supplier to confirm that a specific machine and configuration suit your materials, cut lengths, production pattern, and required edge quality.

Match capacity to material and cut length
Check the rated thickness against the material and grade you intend to cut, as well as the usable cutting length. Published limits can differ by material: Komatsu’s SHS series lists separate thickness limits for soft steel and stainless steel, so its figures are product-line examples, not general hydraulic-shear ratings. Komatsu SHS series specifications
LVD publishes CS-series capacity against steel with a stated tensile strength of 450 N/mm². That material basis matters when comparing the listed thickness with another manufacturer’s rating. LVD also notes that specifications may change without prior notice. LVD CS shears specifications
Assess adjustment and repeatability features
Blade clearance and blade angle (also called rake or shearing angle) affect setup for the job. Compare the adjustment range and how operators set it, rather than assuming every machine offers the same controls. Backgauge range and positioning control also matter when work requires repeated cuts to a specified dimension.

For example, Komatsu describes its SHS as a swing-beam design with a front-panel display for backstop and blade-gap settings, plus NC backstop positioning. These are features of that product line, not a basis for claiming it is more accurate or productive than another machine. Komatsu SHS series details

Consider the whole production setup
Compare stroke range or rate, hold-down arrangement, sheet supports, controls, safeguarding, power requirements, service access, and blade-replacement arrangement. Their practical value depends on how stock is loaded, positioned, cut, and removed in your operation. Check that the intended cut length and backgauge range fit your parts and workflow.
The GMC HS-1010E seller page lists a 10-foot machine with a power backgauge, blade-gap adjustment, hydraulic hold-downs, a viewable finger guard, and foot control. Treat these as seller-published details for that product page; confirm the current configuration, installation requirements, and compliance for your site with the seller and a qualified safety professional. What thickness can a hydraulic shear cut?
There is no single thickness limit that applies to all hydraulic shears or all materials. Use the rating for the exact machine model and material basis, and verify whether it applies to your stock grade and required cutting length. A manufacturer’s maximum should not be treated as a recommended continuous operating limit unless the manufacturer confirms that use.
When requesting a quotation, provide the supplier with material type and grade, thickness range, representative sheet or plate dimensions, cut lengths, and expected production pattern. Ask for written confirmation that the proposed configuration is suitable; do not compare thickness figures without their material qualifications.
Safety: protect the blade and hold-down area
OSHA’s Hazards of Shearing Machines states: “The two primary point-of-operation hazards on shears are the shear blade and the material hold-downs.” OSHA, Hazards of Shearing Machines

OSHA describes safeguards including properly applied fixed or adjustable guards, suitable work-holding, safe work procedures and inspections, instruction, and controls appropriate to the machine. It also cautions against reaching into the point of operation. The publication is older guidance, not a substitute for current local requirements. For a real installation, consult the machine’s instructions, applicable rules in your jurisdiction, and a qualified safety professional. A vendor’s statement that a machine meets a standard is not independent verification.

Blade clearance is a setup variable to verify against the machine manual and the material being processed; do not apply a generic adjustment value across different machines. Confirm the machine’s specified procedure and who is authorized to make the adjustment.
Before buying replacement shear blades, verify the machine make and model, blade dimensions, geometry, material, and configuration with the manufacturer or a compatible industrial blade supplier. Blades are not universal parts. The appropriate blade-change interval, sharpening schedule, hydraulic-fluid specification, and maintenance tasks are also model-specific; use the exact machine manual and manufacturer service guidance rather than a generic schedule.
