Five new floors bring the structure to 58 meters, while a planted, 560-meter exterior path climbs its facades to the garden. The transformation adds public green space to a difficult historic building; it does not erase the bunker’s wartime purpose or turn the entire structure into a park.
What is the Green Bunker in Hamburg?
The Green Bunker is the St. Pauli Bunker, also known as Flakturm IV or the bunker on Feldstraße, in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district. It is a preserved World War II flak bunker whose recent redevelopment combines a rooftop garden and climbing exterior route with cultural, hospitality and community uses. The project is an example of adaptive reuse: a substantial addition and new public functions built around a retained wartime structure.
The project’s official site reports that five floors were added, bringing the building to 58 meters. Its planted mountain path is 560 meters long, leading from ground level up the facades to the public city garden. The project reports approximately 23,000 plants. These are project figures, not independently audited measures of environmental performance. Bunker St. Pauli’s project site
What was the St. Pauli Bunker used for in World War II?
The bunker was built in 1942 in 300 days by forced laborers. The Nazi regime designed it mainly for air defense and also used the concrete structure for propaganda. During the bombing of Hamburg, it served as a shelter. The official project history says as many as 25,000 people sometimes found shelter there. New Atlas reports an official shelter capacity of 18,000; that stated capacity and the reported peak number of people sheltering at once are different figures, not interchangeable measures. After the war, Allied plans to demolish high-rise bunkers as part of denazification were set aside for this structure because its mass made demolition dangerous near residential areas, according to the project history. The bunker later took on cultural and music uses and remains a protected monument. The redevelopment therefore works with a building whose history includes forced labor, Nazi militarism and civilian shelter—not a neutral shell awaiting a new purpose.
How was the bunker transformed?
A planted route up the facade
The mountain path begins at ground level and rises along the bunker’s exterior to the garden at 58 meters. The official opening announcement describes a path up to six meters wide and approximately 23,000 trees, shrubs and perennials across the project. The official 2025 update gives the path length as 560 meters. The route is an architectural landscape on the bunker, rather than a natural mountain or a separate park. A building with multiple uses
The garden is one part of a broader program. Project sources list cultural and exhibition spaces, urban gardening, artist accommodation, school-sports and events space, restaurants, a bar and café, and the Reverb by Hard Rock hotel. These functions share the building with the public green space; they should not be confused with visitor amenities guaranteed to be open at any particular time.
New Atlas reported a redevelopment budget of approximately €100 million in 2024. The project’s 2025 update also describes construction costs of approximately €100 million and says the work was privately financed without public funding. The project site reports that the Green Bunker received the 2025 MIPIM Award in the Best Conversion category. New Atlas, 2024 · Bunker St. Pauli project update

Can you visit the St. Pauli Bunker rooftop garden?
The project announced that the public city garden opened free to visitors on July 5, 2024. That opening announcement does not establish current daily hours, seasonal closures or whether every route and amenity is operating now. Check the official Bunker St. Pauli website for current visitor information before making a trip.
New Atlas reported 335 steps and an elevator as ways to reach the top. Because that access information comes from secondary reporting and current arrangements may change, confirm route availability and accessibility with the official site rather than relying on it for mobility planning. The mountain path and the reported elevator are distinct access options, not evidence that every part of the visit is step-free.

How does the redevelopment address the bunker’s history?
Greening a former Nazi military structure creates a public place, but the history remains central to how the building should be understood. The official project site describes Hilldegarden e.V. as helping advance a memorial initiative intended to make the bunker’s history and the memory of victims of the Nazi regime and World War II visible. This ongoing work should be distinguished from the rooftop garden experience: the available project information does not establish that a fully operating memorial exhibition is part of every visit.
The building’s preservation, new uses and memorial effort represent different approaches to its legacy. The planted route changes how people encounter the exterior; it does not make the original construction or the people forced to build it less important.
