There is no evidence here that every store uses the same evacuation code or customer procedure. Available examples show how one country describes its internal alert system, how another explains what happens to children in Småland, and why an evacuation does not necessarily mean a fire has occurred.
What happens during an IKEA evacuation?
The response depends on the store and the local procedure. IKEA Romania’s FY 2021–22 sustainability report describes a local alert system in which code 1000 signals a complete store evacuation. The report names fire, smoke, and building collapse as examples of hazards and says regular training and simulations support the response. It states: “Another example is an alert framed on code 1000, which indicates an emergency that requires a complete evacuation of the store.” IKEA Romania’s FY 2021–22 sustainability report is evidence about that organization during that reporting period, not proof of a worldwide code.
For UK employees, an IKEA-hosted booklet describes safety induction, learning escape routes and relevant procedures, possible drills, regular testing of fire alarms and evacuation, and an emergency response team at each store. That is employee guidance for the UK; it should not be treated as a universal customer-facing procedure. UK employee booklet: “Fire and evacuation procedures”.
Does every IKEA use code 1000?
The available official evidence establishes code 1000 in IKEA Romania’s FY 2021–22 report only. It does not establish that all IKEA stores use that code. The report also identifies code 500 for first aid, but those code descriptions likewise apply to the local system described in that document. IKEA Romania’s FY 2021–22 sustainability report.

What happens to children in Småland?
IKEA Czech Republic’s Småland terms say staff take children to a safe place if the store is evacuated. Guardians are notified through the internal reporting system and by SMS; the message gives the meeting point. The terms tell guardians to go there as soon as possible, provided it is safe to do so. This is the published procedure for IKEA Czech Republic, not necessarily the procedure in other countries. IKEA Czech Republic’s Småland safety rules and conditions.
Does an evacuation mean there is definitely a fire?
No. In an Emeryville, California, incident, ABC7 reported that a fire report came in around 11:30 a.m. and store management evacuated as a precaution because of an electrical issue. Fire officials determined there was no fire; personnel assessed the situation with PG&E and IKEA management, and the store reopened a short time later. This is one reported incident, not a statement of current policy for other stores. ABC7: “Electrical issue prompts Emeryville IKEA evacuation”.

What to do if you are in a store when an evacuation begins
- Follow staff instructions and the store’s posted directions; do not assume that a code or announcement used elsewhere applies at your location.
- If you are accompanying a child in Småland, follow the instructions from local staff. For the Czech Republic procedure described above, check the SMS for the meeting point and go there if it is safe.
- Do not re-enter until store staff or emergency responders say it is safe. An evacuation may be precautionary, but the reason should not be guessed from the alarm alone.
Why the location and date matter
The title “IKEA evacuation” does not identify one event. A specific incident needs at least a store location and date: a local emergency response, an employee safety booklet, and customer terms for a children’s play area answer different questions. The examples above should not be combined into a single account or treated as proof of one global IKEA procedure.
