To make a roll-up nap mat with a pillow and blanket, first choose whether you are sewing a washable cover for a mat you already own or building a padded mat from scratch. Measure the mat and pillow before cutting: patterns target different sizes, and the example dimensions below are not universal. Then follow one design’s instructions for its panels, pillow arrangement, and roll-up closure.
Choose the construction before buying fabric
| Design | What you make | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Cover for an existing mat | A fitted fabric cover, with the pillow and blanket arranged as the selected pattern specifies. | Measure the mat’s length, width, and thickness; check the pattern’s compatibility claims. A cover pattern lists options for 19-by-44/45-inch mats at specified thicknesses and 24-by-48-inch mats at specified thicknesses; these are that listing’s sizes, not an industry standard. Pattern listing |
| Complete mat | A fabric shell with padding, plus the pillow and blanket components included in the chosen design. | Use a pattern intended for a full mat and its material list. The retrieved examples do not establish one standard size or universal padding specification. Maker’s construction example |
Do not combine measurements or assembly steps from unrelated patterns without checking that the pieces fit together. One listing specifies a 12-by-16-inch travel pillow and names several Kindermat size variants, while a user-submitted project uses different panel dimensions. Pattern listing Maker’s construction example
Measure the mat and plan the pillow
- Lay the mat flat and record its length and width. If it is an existing padded mat, measure its thickness too; that affects how a cover fits.
- Measure the pillow, or confirm the dimensions required by the selected pattern. For example, one pattern listing describes a 12-by-16-inch travel pillow; that size is not a general requirement. Pattern listing
- Decide whether the pillow itself will be removable or whether only its cover is attached. Designs vary: some attach a pillowcase to a purchased mat cover, while others integrate the pillow area at one end. Follow the chosen pattern’s layout.
- Check all measurements against the pattern before cutting. A commercial handmade mat seller describes products around 20–21 inches wide and 53–55 inches long, which illustrates variation rather than a standard to copy. Seller’s product description
Choose fabric and supplies for that design
Use the material list and yardage for the pattern you selected; the available examples do not establish a universal shopping list. Pattern descriptions name cotton for mat covers and cotton, fleece, minky, or flannel for blanket components. Other designs may call for batting, ribbon, clips, straps, or matching thread. Pattern listing Pattern listing
- For a cover: choose the shell fabric and any blanket fabric specified by the pattern, then check the listed mat dimensions and thickness.
- For a padded mat: use the pattern’s specified shell, filling, and assembly method rather than assuming a cover pattern includes instructions for a complete mat.
- For a blanket: select from the fabrics allowed by the chosen design and buy the amount it specifies.
- For closures: gather only the straps, ties, buttons, hook-and-loop fastening, or clips required by that design.
A sewing guide describes small and medium options and includes measurements, materials, drawings, photographs, and a video tutorial. Use its own instructions if choosing that guide rather than mixing its measurements with another pattern. Sewing guide

Sew the panels and attach the blanket
There is no single panel layout shared across these designs. Use the pattern’s cutting plan, especially for a fitted cover or padded mat. One maker’s project is a useful example of a sequence, not a standard specification: it uses two 22-by-52-inch mat panels and a blanket made from two 36-inch squares. Maker’s construction example
- Cut the mat or cover pieces to the selected pattern’s dimensions.
- Prepare the blanket component as the design directs. In the cited maker’s example, the blanket is sewn as a separate panel, turned right-side out, and topstitched before attachment. Other patterns may differ. Maker’s construction example
- Attach the blanket at the location specified in the pattern, keeping its orientation consistent with the mat’s roll-up direction.
- Assemble the mat shell or cover according to the pattern, including any filling or fitted edges it specifies.
Construct the pillow section as directed
Patterns handle pillows differently, so identify what is actually attached before sewing. Some designs attach a pillowcase to a cover for a purchased mat; others integrate a pillow area at one end. Check whether your design attaches the pillow itself or only a pillow cover, then use its placement and assembly instructions. Pattern listing Pattern listing Pattern listing

Fit the roll-up closure to your finished mat
Examples use straps, ties, buttons, hook-and-loop fastening, or clips, but the sources do not compare their durability or safety. Choose a closure compatible with the pattern and intended use; the evidence supports no general claim that one type is safer or stronger. Maker’s construction example Manufacturer’s product page Pattern listing
- Assemble the mat, blanket, and pillow sections before positioning the closure.
- Roll the mat in the direction you intend to use for storage or transport.
- Mark where the selected ties or tabs naturally meet, then follow the chosen pattern’s instructions to attach them.
- Unroll and re-roll the finished mat to confirm the closure reaches as intended and the roll stays together for your planned use. This is a fit check, not a comparative test of closure performance.
Care for the actual materials used
Follow the care information for your fabric and any batting or filling, and check whether the completed mat’s components can be washed together. Wildkin gives care instructions for its own Original Nap Mat Pillow and describes compatibility with Wildkin Original and Microfiber nap mats and JumpOff Jo’s Toddler XL nap mat. Those product-specific statements do not establish care instructions or compatibility for a handmade mat. Wildkin product information
