An RC Nerf tank is a tracked robot with a remotely controlled foam-dart launcher, not one standardized kit or design. Build approaches range from adapting an existing chassis to printing a custom tank and turret; the right controls and launcher depend on the parts you choose. Here’s how the documented approaches differ and what to plan before building or testing one.
Choose a build approach before choosing components
Start with the chassis and control method. The documented projects below are examples, not interchangeable parts lists: motors, controllers, battery requirements, and launcher mechanisms must match the selected platform.
| Approach | Chassis and control | Launcher and other features |
|---|---|---|
| Cornell student project (2021) | Tracked tank controlled by a PIC32 microcontroller; a phone sends commands over Bluetooth. An L298N H-bridge controls the drive motors. | A relay switches a modified motorized blaster. An ultrasonic sensor measures obstacle distance. The team said the relay simplified firing control but offered less control over blaster motor speed. |
| Printed tank and turret | Custom 3D-printed platform with an Atmega2560-based board and commercial RC transmitter and receiver. | Flywheel dart launcher with a rotating dart pusher. The tutorial discusses turret weight and fitting printed parts, including test prints. |
| Adapted tracked chassis | BasicMicro’s project description lists two gearmotors, a RoboClaw 2x60A motor controller, FlySky radio controls, and a LiPo battery. | Uses a toy Nerf gatling gun. The source’s chassis availability information is time-sensitive and should be checked before sourcing parts. |
For a concise example of the phone-controlled design, see Cornell ECE 4760’s Remote Control Tank project. For the printed turret approach, see HowToMechatronics’ 3D-printed RC tank turret tutorial.
Plan the chassis, drivetrain, and controls
Chassis and fabrication
An adapted tracked chassis can reduce the amount of fabrication, while a printed tank lets you shape the body and turret around the mechanism. A custom print also introduces fit and weight considerations: the printed-turret tutorial specifically notes the added turret mass and recommends checking fit with test prints.

Drive motors and controller
Tracked steering typically depends on independently controlling the left and right drive sides. In Cornell’s implementation, an H-bridge handles drive-motor direction and speed. Its L298N is one documented choice, not a universal recommendation. Check the selected motors’ voltage and current requirements against the motor controller and power supply before connecting them.
Phone control or RC radio
A Bluetooth-connected phone and microcontroller can combine movement and firing commands in a custom control system. A conventional RC transmitter and receiver provide a different control route, used in the printed-tank and BasicMicro examples. These approaches require different electronics and integration; choose one before selecting the rest of the control hardware.

Choose how the launcher fires
The Cornell project and printed-turret tutorial use different actuation approaches. Cornell switched a modified motorized blaster circuit with a relay; its authors noted that this made firing control simpler but gave them less control over blaster motor speed. The printed turret instead uses flywheels and a rotating dart pusher. The mechanism you choose affects how the launcher fits the turret, how it is controlled, and how the darts are fed.
HowToMechatronics attributes estimates of about 200 darts per minute, about 50 m/s, and about 12 meters of range to its particular turret build. The page’s publication date is not confirmed, and these are the author’s build-specific figures—not independent measurements or specifications for Nerf launchers generally. Do not use them as guaranteed performance targets.

Assemble and test the robot in stages
- Set the platform and control architecture. Decide whether you are adapting a tracked chassis or printing one, and whether you will use a phone with Bluetooth or an RC transmitter and receiver.
- Match the drivetrain electronics. Select the drive motors, motor controller, and power arrangement as a compatible group. Cornell’s L298N setup is a reference example; it does not establish suitability for different motors.
- Integrate the launcher separately. Choose a documented actuation approach, such as a relay-switched motorized blaster or a flywheel-and-pusher turret, and plan how it will fit and receive control signals.
- Check mechanical fit and balance. Account for the turret’s added mass and verify printed-part fit before committing to a complete assembly. The printed-tank tutorial points to 3D model and STL files and discusses test prints.
- Test movement and firing in a controlled area. Confirm movement and turning first, then test the launcher with the area clear and no one in its path. Keep firing tests directed away from people.
Treat foam-dart firing as a real safety risk
Foam darts should not be assumed harmless. In a February 27, 2026 report, Hackaday described a builder’s test of a newer tracked Nerf robot in which darts left welts through a sweatshirt. That is one builder’s reported observation, not a formal safety test or a universal performance figure. See Hackaday’s report on the tracked RC tank.
- Never aim or fire the launcher at a person or animal.
- Keep bystanders out of the firing area during testing.
- Do not describe a build as harmless or assume that foam ammunition cannot injure.
The cited project reports do not establish a general safety standard or legal assessment for RC Nerf builds. Builders must assess their setup and local requirements rather than treating a project tutorial as a safety certification.

What the earlier RC Nerf tank projects show
The name covers a family of projects rather than a single design. Make:’s 2009 overview links to an Instructables build and mentions a camera, laser sight, and sound system; it is a short overview, not a complete set of build instructions. Later examples include Cornell’s phone-controlled student project and a custom printed tank with a turret. Their differing chassis, controls, sensors, and launcher mechanisms are why a parts list from one should not be treated as a drop-in recipe for another.
