The example below follows the interlocking design described by Instructables; its measurements are a starting point, not a tested template or a load rating. Measure the item you plan to hold and test the finished stand on a stable surface before relying on it.
Materials and tools
- Corrugated cardboard with two layers of flutes, preferably sound and flat
- Ruler and pencil
- Scissors for cardboard they can cut cleanly, or a cutter used with suitable supervision and a cutting mat
- White glue for the small retaining strip
The main pieces lock together through slots; glue is specified for the retainer. Reusing suitable shipping-box cardboard is practical, but these instructions do not establish a numerical environmental benefit.
Build the interlocking stand
The measurements below are the example given in the 2015 Instructables instructions, not universal dimensions. Corrugated cardboard thickness and the object’s size affect fit, so check each piece against the others as you work.
1. Cut the first trapezoid support
On the cardboard, mark a trapezoid with a 25 cm right side, a 12 cm bottom, and a 2 cm top. Mark a line 2 cm in from the side. Cut a narrow slot, about 0.5 cm wide, along that line, stopping 1 cm short of both the top and bottom. Keep the cut aligned and clean; the slot needs to accept the matching support.

2. Make and join the second support
Trace and cut a second trapezoid to match the first. Make the corresponding slot and end notches as shown in the original build instructions. Slide the two supports together at right angles until the joint is secure. If the pieces are too tight, adjust the slot carefully rather than forcing the cardboard and crushing its flutes.
3. Fit the base
Cut a 15 × 30 cm rectangular base for the published example. Set the joined supports on the base, trace their positions, then cut slots so the support assembly can pass through. The example instructions specify 9.3 cm for the shortened long strips. Treat that as a reference measurement and confirm the fit against your actual support and cardboard before cutting.

Insert the base onto the support assembly from above and press it into place. The base should sit securely without tearing or buckling. If it does not, recheck the slot positions and widen them only as needed for a snug fit.
4. Position the retaining strip
Cut a small strip—about 0.5 × 9 cm in the example—and test where it should sit between the vertical support and the outer edge. Place the intended item on the stand before gluing the strip; its position sets how far the item leans and keeps it from sliding forward. Once the angle and fit are useful, glue the strip in place and allow the glue to set before use.

Check fit and stability before use
The design is described for phones, tablets, magazines, papers, and light books. No tested load rating or validated maximum device size is provided, so do not assume it can support a heavy device or other substantial weight.
- Place the stand on a level, stable surface and test it with the lightweight item you intend to use.
- Check that the item rests against the support and retaining strip without sliding forward.
- Watch for tipping, flexing, torn slots, or a base that lifts off the surface; stop using the stand if any occur.
- Make one adjustment at a time, then repeat the test. These adjustments are design changes, not performance guarantees.
If the item slides
Move the retaining strip to a position that gives the item a more useful lean, increase the front lip, or add a grippy strip. Check that a change does not make the stand unstable.

- Clean natural look, nothing fancy: Natural wood finish that blends into any booth or counter. Not a heavy-duty display case, just a practical stand that shows off your products without getting in the way.
If the stand tips or flexes
Widen or reinforce the base, widen the back support, or adjust the support angle. A second cardboard layer can reinforce the base, but the finished build still needs to be tested with the intended item.
If you need a different viewing position
Change the support angle or retainer position and test again. A cable opening or a second viewing position can be incorporated if the stand remains stable; neither feature should compromise the support or base.

Safety while cutting and assembling
Use only tools and joining methods you can handle safely. Cut on an appropriate surface, keep hands out of the cutting path, and get supervision before using a blade or hot glue. For craft-knife work, DIY.org advises adult supervision and a cutting mat. Keep the device off the stand until the joins are secure and any glue has set.
A simpler phone-only alternative
This separate method uses a base and a taped back support rather than interlocking trapezoids. DIY.org describes it as a phone stand; its dimensions and assembly should not be mixed with the build above.
Quick Recap
- Measure the phone and draw a base rectangle about 1 cm wider and taller than the phone.
- Draw a back-support strip about as tall as the phone and about 4 cm wide, with a 1 cm fold line.
- Cut the pieces, score and fold a small front lip, then tape the support to the rear of the base at a slight angle.
- Test the phone on a stable surface. If it slides, add tape to the lip; if the stand tips or slips, widen the back support, add a second cardboard layer under the base, or tighten the taped fold. Test again after each change.
