You can make a wooden beer mug either by turning a glued-up blank on a lathe or by assembling a vessel from staves. To hold beer without leaking or degrading, the interior needs a finish suited to liquid contact, and the mug needs care matched to that finish. Oil is water-resistant, not waterproof; a film-forming epoxy may offer more protection but can separate if the wood moves.
Choose a construction method
The two approaches below involve different skills and equipment. The available sources document one turned project and one maker’s stave-built tankards; neither provides a universal plan with standard dimensions.

Choose wood and an interior finish together
The American Association of Woodturners (AAW) names dense, fine-grained hardwoods such as hard maple and beech as candidates for liquid-use vessels. It does not establish a single best species through comparative tests. Its 2016 expert guidance says natural oils can be applied in multiple coats, with each coat fully cured before the next, but the result is water-resistant rather than waterproof and may need periodic renewal. Carnauba wax can improve water resistance. Read the AAW’s finish guidance.

The AAW advises against evaporative shellac or lacquer for this liquid-vessel application. Its guidance is dated 2016, so current product labels and instructions should guide the actual build.

Build the mug and apply its finish
For a turned mug
- Cut pieces for a blank, then glue and clamp the assembly. The Make Something tutorial demonstrates this sequence; choose dimensions and joinery based on your own stock and setup.
- After the glue has dried, turn the blank on a lathe and hollow it. Picciuto’s project uses a Forstner bit for hollowing.
- Apply an interior finish only after confirming that the particular product is intended for the use you have in mind. For epoxy, follow that manufacturer’s mixing, application, and curing instructions exactly.
Picciuto discusses uncertainty about food-safety claims and gives his own judgment about the epoxy he used. That is an individual creator’s account, not a safety certification or a general recommendation. Do not treat a cure time mentioned in a project video as a universal instruction.
For a stave-built mug
Stave construction is a separate route, but the cited maker’s page does not give enough detail to serve as a construction sequence. Use a construction plan suited to your joinery and tools, and select the finish for the intended liquid-contact use rather than assuming that a stave-built vessel is leakproof by design.

Clean and maintain the mug according to its finish
For its own tankards finished with natural oils and waxes, Tusk & Braid recommends hand washing with mild soap and warm water, drying promptly, avoiding long soaks and dishwasher or microwave use, and renewing the surface with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax balm when it looks dry.
