Make an oversized Twister-style game by marking colored circles on a level patch of grass with a cardboard stencil and marking spray paint. A Lawncentral project guide recommends a 7.5-inch circle template and a 24-circle layout for up to four players; use its counts as a DIY starting point, not as an official Hasbro rule.
What you need
- 10-by-10-inch piece of cardboard
- Scissors
- Yard stakes, string, and a hammer
- Marking spray paint in green, red, blue, and yellow
- A clear, level area of grass
These materials follow the Lawncentral “Project: Lawn Twister” guide, published around 2020. The guide does not specify a paint brand or formulation. Read and follow the current label for the product you choose; do not assume every marking paint is suitable for every lawn or will wash away easily.
Choose a layout and make the stencil
Cut the circle template
- Draw a 7.5-inch-diameter circle on the cardboard.
- Cut out the circle to make a reusable stencil. The Lawncentral guide notes that a larger circle makes a larger board and may make play harder for smaller children; treat that as a design suggestion and choose a size that fits your group and space.
Plan the number of circles
The guide suggests 24 circles for up to four players, then six additional circles for each player beyond four. That is a project layout recommendation, not an official game rule, and it does not specify a total board footprint. Fit the arrangement to your available lawn rather than relying on an assumed overall dimension.
Mark and paint the lawn
- Choose a clear, level patch of grass with enough room for players to move around the marked area.
- Use yard stakes and string to mark the layout’s perimeter.
- Place the cardboard stencil inside the perimeter and spray one colored circle at a time. Alternate green, red, blue, and yellow in rows for a traditional look, or mix the colors if you prefer.
- Let the paint dry for the time stated on its label before playing. The project guide gives no drying duration, lawn-compatibility guidance, or removal method.
How to play
Use a caller or spinner to name a hand or foot and a color—for example, “right hand, blue.” Players try to place the named limb on an open circle of that color while keeping their balance. For the classic Hasbro version, a player is out after falling or touching the mat with a knee or elbow; the last player standing wins. Hasbro lists its classic set for ages 6 and up and two or more players, but that product guidance is not an age rating for a homemade lawn game. For larger groups, the Lawncentral guide suggests adding six circles per person beyond four. It does not specify changes to the caller or game mechanics, so decide how players will take turns before starting.
Want an outdoor game without painting the lawn?
Hasbro’s TWISTER Scram is a separate, ready-made outdoor format. Hasbro lists weather-resistant colored mats, 24 mats, a spinner, a tote bag, and rules. Check the product page for current availability; its mats are not the same as a painted lawn layout.

Giant Games Australia lists a 3 m by 3 m plastic mat, two inflatable dice, and instructions for its giant Twister rental, with age suitability listed as 3+.
