You can make a simple wire spring by winding suitable wire around a mandrel or with a spring winder—but the right wire and dimensions depend on what the spring must do. The available examples support small hobby projects and jewelry-clasp repairs, not a universal recipe. For a high-load or safety-critical mechanism, use a correctly rated replacement or consult a qualified spring maker.
Choose the right approach for the job
A spring winder is purpose-built for coiling wire. McMaster-Carr describes its winders as tools to “Coil round and flat wire to make your own springs.” The category page establishes the tool’s general use, not that every winder suits every wire size or project. See McMaster-Carr’s winders.
A mandrel offers a simpler forming approach for a small, low-load project. It is less purpose-specific, so the result depends on the setup and the maker’s ability to keep the winding consistent.
| Approach | What the sources establish | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Spring winder | A purpose-built tool for coiling round or flat wire into springs; the catalog page does not specify suitability for every application. McMaster-Carr. | When you want a dedicated winding tool and the tool is compatible with your wire and intended spring. |
| Mandrel | A documented hobby project formed a spring around PVC pipe, but that example is specific to its mechanism. Flite Test project. | A simple, low-load project where the spring can be checked in its actual application. |
For a small hobby spring, start with the application
Before winding anything, establish what the spring needs to do and whether failure would be harmless. Wire diameter, material, coil dimensions, end shape, installation, and how often the spring cycles all affect whether it will fit and work. The available sources do not provide engineering rules to calculate those choices or a general heat-treatment procedure.

#1 Best Overall
- Sufficient Quantity: 3 spring hook tools, suitable size, can enter small spaces, very suitable for grabbing springs, well made and sturdy, can be made use of a long time
- Suitable Size: the spring hooks are about 6.4 inches long, with different styles at both ends to meet different usage needs; Suitable for light springs, which may deform if subjected to excessive force
- Quality Material: spring tools stainless steel, double-headed knurled handle anti-slip design, clear texture, easy to hold and use
- Exquisite Design: the tip of the spring puller tool is designed to facilitate entering narrow spaces and is applied to hook small items such as springs and rubber bands
- Fully Functional: multifunctional hook tool, installation and removal of coil springs (tension springs), auxiliary tools for wiring work, parts replacement, replacement of rubber belts
One Flite Test author made a spring for a model-aircraft parachute deployment mechanism using stiff 14-gauge wire formed around 1¼-inch PVC pipe. The author noted that the spring rebounded during forming and used a diameter smaller than the launch tube. Those details describe that project only; they are not general wire, mandrel, or sizing recommendations. Read the project account.
- Define the task. Identify where the spring fits, what it must move or resist, and how often it will be used.
- Select a suitable wire and forming method. Confirm the wire and tool or mandrel are appropriate for the intended spring; the cited examples do not establish universal material or size specifications.
- Form the spring around the mandrel or with a compatible winder. Expect wire to move or rebound during forming, as it did in the Flite Test project.
- Check fit and operation in the actual mechanism. Do not assume a spring that resembles the example will perform safely in a different device.
For jewelry clasps, use clasp spring wire
Cousins UK’s 2018 jewelry catalogue lists spring wire for making and repairing clasp springs in 0.33 mm, 0.50 mm, and 0.75 mm diameters. These are product specifications for that catalog’s jewelry use case—not general spring-sizing guidance. Check current product details before buying, because the cited catalogue is from 2018. Do not use a hobby winding example for a dangerous mechanism
A spring in a high-energy device can store and release substantial force. An informal discussion about a power-hammer spring raises the possibility of severe injury if it fails, as well as heat-treatment and fatigue concerns; it is a hazard warning, not an engineering standard. Read the forum discussion.
Do not improvise a replacement for a power hammer, garage door, or other high-load or safety-critical device based on a hobby example. Use a correctly rated replacement or consult a qualified spring maker. The sources do not establish safe load limits, design calculations, or heat-treatment instructions for these applications.
