Do not plug an appliance marked only for 100V directly into a 120V household outlet. First check the appliance and its power supply label. If the stated input range includes 120V, it may not need voltage conversion; if it is 100V-only, a properly specified 120V-to-100V step-down transformer may be appropriate. A plug adapter changes the plug shape, not the voltage or frequency.
Check the appliance and power-supply labels first
Look on the appliance, cord, and any external power supply for its input voltage, frequency (Hz), current (A), wattage (W), and manufacturer cautions. Use the input rating on the power supply itself when the appliance runs from a separate power brick.
A marking such as “INPUT: 110–240V” includes 120V. Electrical Safety First gives that span as an example of a dual-voltage rating that can work across supplies from 110V to 240V. A label that specifies only 100V does not establish compatibility with 120V. Electrical Safety First advises that a different supply voltage requires a transformer or converter unless the appliance or its power supply is dual-voltage rated: Travel Adapter – Information For Travellers: Using Electricals Overseas.
Even when the voltage range includes 120V, check frequency, grounding, polarity, and plug compatibility. A dual-voltage label addresses voltage; it does not by itself confirm every other aspect of safe operation.

If the appliance is 100V-only, assess a step-down transformer
The relevant product category is a 120V-to-100V step-down transformer. Its input and output ratings must suit the supply and appliance, and its capacity must cover the appliance’s stated load. Do not exceed the transformer’s maximum watt or amp rating. Electrical Safety First discusses transformer and converter capacity and cautions that some appliances are not suitable for some converters: Electrical Safety First travel advice.
The appliance model matters. A nameplate load alone may not capture startup or inrush demand, and the available information does not establish a universal transformer size or approval for any particular appliance. Check the appliance and transformer manuals; ask the appliance manufacturer if they do not resolve whether transformer use is suitable.

Match the transformer to the way you use the appliance
Check whether the transformer is rated for the appliance’s operating duration. Electrical Safety First describes converters as typically intended for short use—1–2 hours—and most transformers as suitable for continuous use. Treat that as general guidance, not a specification for every product: follow the actual transformer manual and appliance maker’s instructions. Electrical Safety First guidance for Ecuador.
Check frequency as well as voltage
Electrical Safety First lists U.S. household supply as 120V and 60Hz. A step-down transformer reduces voltage; that alone does not establish that the appliance will operate properly at 60Hz. Check the appliance’s frequency marking and manual, especially for clocks, motors, timing devices, and other frequency-sensitive equipment. Electrical Safety First notes that a 50Hz clock may run faster on 60Hz: Travel Adaptor for United States / USA Plug Type.

If the appliance is marked only for a different frequency, or the frequency requirement is unclear, ask the manufacturer before using it. Electrical Safety First also names game consoles, TVs, radios, and computers as examples of electronics that may not be suitable for some converters. That warning is not a blanket verdict on every electronic device or every transformer; confirm compatibility for the specific appliance and conversion equipment.
Keep the plug and grounding arrangement safe
A travel adapter lets a plug fit a socket; it does not convert voltage or frequency. Electrical Safety First states this directly in its U.S. travel guidance: “It is important to note that it does not convert the voltage or frequency.” Electrical Safety First U.S. travel advice.

If the appliance requires an earth/ground connection, use a compatible grounded arrangement that preserves it. Some adapters are unsuitable for grounded appliances and are intended only for double-insulated equipment. Never force a plug into a socket or use damaged cords. Stop using the setup if you notice overheating, arcing, or a burning smell.

- Read the rating plates. Check the appliance and power supply for input voltage, frequency, current, wattage, and cautions.
- Decide whether the input includes 120V. If it does, voltage conversion may be unnecessary; verify the other electrical requirements and plug/grounding arrangement. If it says only 100V, do not connect it directly to 120V.
- For a 100V-only appliance, verify transformer suitability. Confirm 120V input and 100V output, sufficient watt/amp capacity, allowance for startup demand, and a duty rating that fits how long the appliance will run.
- Confirm frequency and grounding. Check that the appliance supports 60Hz if that is the home supply frequency, and that the complete setup preserves any required earth/ground connection.
- Ask before use if a material detail remains uncertain. Contact the appliance manufacturer or a qualified electrician rather than testing the setup by trial and error.
The exact transformer capacity cannot be determined without the appliance model, load, startup behavior, operating duration, and design. The appliance’s own instructions and the transformer’s manual are the deciding references.
