To save pumpkin seeds for planting, start with a fully mature pumpkin, scoop out and wash the seeds, then air-dry them completely before labeling and storing them somewhere cool, dark, and dry. For the best chance of seedlings resembling the parent, choose an open-pollinated variety and consider whether compatible pumpkins or squash could have cross-pollinated it.
Can you save seeds from this pumpkin?
Usually, yes—but the fruit’s appearance does not tell you whether its seeds will grow into the same kind of pumpkin. Pumpkins have separate male and female flowers and are pollinated by insects. If a compatible variety flowered nearby, pollen may have crossed. That does not change the pumpkin already growing; it can affect the traits of plants grown from its seeds. For a better chance of retaining the parent’s traits, save seed from an open-pollinated variety. Seed saved from a hybrid may not breed true, even if no other variety was nearby. Also check the crop’s species: “pumpkin” covers several cultivated groups, and not all pumpkins and squash are compatible for crossing. Field pumpkins and zucchini are often Cucurbita pepo, while other pumpkins and squash may be C. maxima or C. moschata. How can you reduce cross-pollination?
If preserving a variety’s identity matters, think about pollination before the flowers open. Options include growing only one compatible variety, isolating plants, or protecting flowers and hand-pollinating them. Separation distances are not universal guarantees: recommendations differ, and pollinator movement, barriers, and local growing conditions affect the result.

- Protect and hand-pollinate flowers. SDSU Extension describes bagging or taping flowers before they open, transferring pollen by hand when the female flower opens, and marking the resulting fruit so you know which one to save.
How to save pumpkin seeds, step by step
1. Choose a healthy, fully mature pumpkin
Select a healthy fruit from a plant with traits you want to keep, and let it reach full maturity before harvesting it for seed. If you want seedlings more likely to resemble the parent, use an open-pollinated variety rather than relying on seed from a hybrid. A mature-looking pumpkin still may have been cross-pollinated; the uncertainty concerns the next generation, not the fruit you are harvesting.
2. Scoop out and wash the seeds

3. Air-dry the seeds completely
Spread the cleaned seeds in a single layer on a clean screen or another clean drying surface. A screen allows airflow and makes it easy to turn the seeds. Turn or mix them during the first couple of days, then leave them in a cool, dry area until fully dry. North Carolina Cooperative Extension recommends a minimum of three weeks. 4. Label and store them
Put completely dry seeds in a labeled paper envelope. Write the variety or cultivar and the collection year or date on the label. Keep the envelope in a cool, dark, dry place. A refrigerator can work if the seeds are packaged to protect them from moisture; Oregon State Extension notes that a desiccant can help maintain dryness. How long will saved pumpkin seeds last?
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach lists pumpkin seeds as having a storage life of three to four years under proper conditions (2024). Treat that as an expected storage life, not a promise that every seed will germinate: viability declines over time and depends on how the seeds were dried and stored.
