To winterize a swamp cooler, disconnect its power, shut off the water, drain the reservoir and supply line, clean and dry the unit according to its manual, then cover a fixed cooler or store a portable one in a dry sheltered place. The steps for pads, drains, and duct dampers vary by model and installation, so use your cooler’s owner’s manual for those details.

Before you start: identify the cooler and its shutoffs

Find the owner’s manual and confirm whether the unit is rooftop or ducted, window-mounted, or portable. Locate the water shutoff, drain or overflow, and any separate motor or pump disconnect. A rooftop cooler stays installed through winter; a portable cooler can generally be moved to sheltered storage if the manual permits.

Gather a sponge or soft cloth and, if the manual calls for one, a drain hose. Follow the manual’s restrictions on cleaning products and water exposure.

How to winterize a swamp cooler

  1. Disconnect the power. Turn off and disconnect electrical power before opening or servicing the cooler. The Frigiking manufacturer’s owner’s guide warns: “CAUTION: Disconnect all electrical power to the cooler before attempting to install, open, or service your cooler.” Follow the unit’s manual for any separate motor or pump disconnect.
  2. Shut off the water. Close the supply valve to the cooler. Confirm the line is no longer feeding water before draining.
  3. Drain the reservoir and water line. Use the drain method in the owner’s manual. For example, Frigiking’s guide directs owners to remove the overflow standpipe, drain and clean the reservoir, and soak up remaining water with a rag or sponge. Drain the supply line as well; for extended seasonal storage, that guide says to disconnect the line at both ends to help prevent freezing.
  4. Clean the unit as its manual allows. Remove debris and mineral scale using permitted methods. Cleaning restrictions are model-specific: the Frigiking guide, for example, says not to wash its cabinet with a garden hose and prohibits certain cooler cleaners, treatments, anodes, and other chemical additives. Do not assume another model has the same restrictions—or that a chemical product is suitable without checking its manual.
  5. Inspect the pads and frames. Look for damaged, clogged, or worn pads. Replace them only if their condition calls for it, and verify the make, model, part number, and dimensions before ordering. Some manuals give instructions for removing pads; do not treat pad removal as a universal winterizing step.
  6. Dry and protect the cooler. Let the reservoir and reusable media dry as directed. Cover a fixed unit with a suitable cooler cover or tarp. Move a portable cooler to a dry sheltered location where practical, and cover it if its manufacturer recommends doing so.

Fixed, rooftop, and ducted coolers

For an installed cooler, make sure the water supply is shut off, the reservoir and line are drained, and the unit is protected from weather. Consult the owner’s manual for any duct, damper, or indoor-opening instructions: there is no single damper procedure established for every cooler and installation. Municipal guidance from the City of Apache Junction also recommends shutting off the water, draining the pan, cleaning the exterior, and installing a cover.

Portable coolers

After cleaning and fully drying the internal parts as the manual directs, disconnect the power cord and store the cooler in a dry sheltered location if possible. Portacool’s seasonal guidance recommends covering the unit with its protective cover or a tarp. Follow the specific model’s directions for pads and storage preparation.

When should you replace the pads?

Winterizing is a good time to inspect pads, but replacement depends on their condition and the cooler’s requirements. If pads are clogged, damaged, or worn, check the owner’s manual and confirm the correct replacement part or dimensions. Frigiking advises using the unit’s model and serial number when ordering its parts. Do not remove pads for storage unless the manual calls for it.
