To train clematis, give it a stable support with narrow elements its leaf stalks can grasp, then spread the young stems across the framework and secure them loosely with soft ties. Clematis climbs by wrapping its leaf petioles around nearby supports; it may not catch a wide, smooth surface on its own.
Choose a support clematis can grasp
A trellis, fence, wire framework or arbor can all work if they are stable and have narrow elements for the leaf stalks to wrap around. K-State Research and Extension advises that a support should be no thicker than a pencil. A broad, smooth post or panel may be too wide for the petioles to grip.
For a wall or fence, mount wires or trellis with a gap from the surface so stems can grow behind or through the framework rather than being pressed flat against it. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes this approach in its clematis growing guide; K-State’s support guidance is in its clematis publication.
Guide and tie the first stems
- Prepare the permanent support first. Install the trellis or wires before directing stems onto them, and check that the structure is stable.
- Spread the stems over the framework. Gently arrange young growth across the available space instead of letting it bunch into one tangle. For wall training, slender bamboo canes can temporarily lead stems toward the wires; arrange the main stems in a fan.
- Secure stems with soft, loose ties. Use garden twine or another soft tie only as firmly as needed to hold each stem in place. Make a loose figure-of-eight around the stem and support, with the twine between them as a cushion. Avoid plastic twist ties, which can cut into stems.
Young clematis stems are fragile, so do not pull them tight or force them around the support. The RHS gives the figure-of-eight tying method and cautions against plastic ties in its growing guide.

Keep training as the clematis grows
Check the plant as new shoots lengthen. Guide them across open areas of the trellis or wires and tie them loosely where needed. Once a leaf stalk has wrapped around and holds a stem in place, remove or loosen its temporary tie. There is no universal tie spacing established in the cited guidance; use only enough ties to direct and support growth.
Prune carefully, especially after planting
For a newly planted climbing clematis, the RHS recommends cutting stems back to 15–30 cm (6 in–1 ft) above ground, just above a bud, to encourage a bushier plant. The appropriate timing depends on whether planting took place in spring or autumn; consult the RHS growing guide for that timing.

Do not apply that initial cutback as a routine pruning schedule for an established plant. Established clematis are grouped by flowering time because they flower on different ages of growth. Identify the cultivar or observe when it flowers before deciding how to prune. Dates and planting advice may need adjustment for the cultivar and local climate.

Match the support to the site
- Open garden location: A stable freestanding trellis or fence gives stems a framework to spread over.
- Wall or fence surface: Use wires or trellis set away from the surface, and use canes temporarily if stems need help reaching the framework.
- Any support: Keep grasping elements narrow and use loose, soft ties while stems are young.
