For a small, isolated shrub, dig or pull out the root crown rather than simply cutting the stems. Moist soil makes pulling easier, and removing as much of the crown and major roots as practical reduces the chance of regrowth. Before digging, check for underground utilities and assess the shrub’s size, location and hazards.

Choose a method that fits the shrub and site

Digging or leverage-assisted pulling is usually the most direct approach for a manageable shrub when you want to remove its roots. Cutting stems is different: it clears the above-ground growth but can leave roots that resprout. For a large shrub, extensive roots or a difficult work area, a landscaping or brush-removal service may be more practical than DIY removal.

Method Best suited to What to expect
Digging with a spade or similar tool Small shrubs and accessible root crowns Lets you loosen soil and remove the crown and major roots; effort increases with size and root extent.
Pulling with a shrub wrench Small trees and shrubs that can be reached and safely levered A lever-action tool provides added pulling force. Penn State Extension identifies a shrub wrench for this use: Integrated Forest Vegetation Management.
Cutting stems Clearing above-ground growth when root removal is not practical Does not necessarily remove the root system. Many woody plants can resprout; Minnesota Extension says most deciduous trees and shrubs resprout after the trunk is cut: Woody vegetation control.
Repeated mechanical control or cut-stump treatment Some shrubs that resprout after cutting Effectiveness and appropriate treatment depend on the species and conditions. Use any herbicide only according to its label and local rules.

Prepare the work area before digging

  • Assess the shrub. Note its size, root spread if visible, and proximity to foundations, paving, fences, other plants and utilities. Identify the plant if possible, especially if it may have irritating or poisonous sap.
  • Arrange utility locating. Contact your local one-call service and follow its requirements before digging. Requirements and timelines vary by location. Minnesota Extension advises locating underground and overhead utilities before planting; that is a sound safety precaution, not a universal legal timeline for shrub removal: Planting and transplanting trees and shrubs.
  • Choose a safe tool and approach. A spade or similar digging tool works for small plants; a grubbing hoe can help with larger shrubs. A shrub wrench can add leverage for small trees and shrubs. Avoid forcing tools near buried services or desirable plants.

Dig or pull out a manageable shrub

  1. Work when the soil is moist. Penn State Extension notes that high soil moisture makes pulling easier. If the ground is dry and hard, waiting for suitable moisture can reduce the effort.
  2. Expose the root crown. Use a spade to loosen soil around the base of the shrub. Work around the crown rather than chopping blindly through roots, particularly where nearby plants or buried services may be present.
  3. Use leverage carefully if pulling. Position a shrub wrench as directed by its manufacturer and pull steadily. Penn State Extension describes the tool as a way to pull small trees and shrubs; it is not a substitute for judging whether the plant, footing and surrounding area can be handled safely.
  4. Remove the crown and practical major roots. Continue loosening soil and lifting or cutting roots as needed. Remove as much of the root crown and major roots as is practical without damaging nearby features. A large or deeply rooted shrub may be beyond reasonable hand removal.
  5. Check the cleared spot. Look for remaining crown material or substantial roots that could interfere with the intended replacement planting or site use.

If you cut the shrub instead of removing its roots

Use loppers or a saw to cut stems near ground level, but plan for possible regrowth: cutting alone does not reliably kill or remove the roots. Minnesota Extension reports that most deciduous trees and shrubs resprout after the trunk is cut. Depending on the species, repeated mechanical control or a cut-stump herbicide may be considered. Herbicide products and directions differ, so follow the specific product label and local rules rather than applying a generic rate or method.

Protect yourself around hazardous plants and tools

Poison ivy and poison oak roots and stems can contain urushiol during grubbing or pulling. Oregon State University Extension recommends protective clothing and gloves for direct contact and says people sensitive to urushiol should avoid hand removal: Invasive Weeds in Forest Land Management. Do not burn poison ivy or poison oak; Oregon State Extension warns against burning because of health concerns. If the work involves a chainsaw, use appropriate protective equipment and operate it only if you can do so safely.

Restore the area after removal

Removing extensive roots can leave bare soil that is vulnerable to reinvasion. Cover exposed ground with organic matter or establish desirable vegetation promptly, as Oregon State Extension recommends. Choose replacement plants for the site’s actual growing conditions and leave the area stable while disturbed soil recovers.

When to get help

Consider a qualified landscaping or brush-removal professional if the shrub is large, its roots are extensive, access is difficult, utilities are nearby, or work would bring you close to overhead wires. There is no single size threshold that applies everywhere; the decision depends on the plant, site and your ability to use the tools safely.
