Drought, nutrient problems, dog urine, fertilizer injury, disease, and pests can look similar; some grass also recovers once temporary stress passes. Check the pattern, the blades, and what happened recently, then treat only the cause you can support.
Start with the pattern, not a product
Look at whether the color change affects most of the lawn or appears in distinct patches. Note whether blades are pale or straw-colored, whether the grass is dry or has visible lesions, and whether the damage followed fertilizer, chemical use, dog visits, or a dry spell. Green margins around a small spot, persistent footprints, or a recent spill can help narrow the possibilities, but no single visual clue proves the cause. Maryland Extension’s lawn diagnostic guidance describes several possible causes, including disease, pests, mowing injury, and environmental stress.
- Most of the lawn is pale, bluish, or brown: check for dry soil and drought clues.
- Blades are yellow or striped: consider nutrient availability, but test the soil before applying fertilizer or lime.
- A small straw-colored spot has a greener edge: dog urine is possible, though the pattern is not conclusive.
- Streaks or patches appeared after lawn treatment: investigate fertilizer or other chemical injury.
- There are irregular patches, rings, lesions, or insects: consider disease or pests rather than treating by color alone.
If the whole lawn is pale and dry, check for drought
Drought-stressed cool-season grass may look pale, bluish-green, or brown. Footprints that remain visible after walking across the lawn are another clue. Maryland Extension notes that rain or irrigation can restore soil moisture and allow drought-stressed turf to recover. If the soil is dry and the lawn shows these signs, give it a chance to respond to restored moisture before assuming it needs nutrients.
If blades are yellow or striped, test before fertilizing
Nitrogen deficiency can yellow grass, while low iron may cause yellow stripes with green veins. Soil acidity can also interfere with nutrient uptake, so adding fertilizer without knowing the soil’s condition may miss the problem. A laboratory soil test checks nutrient levels and pH and can guide whether fertilizer or lime is appropriate. Follow the test results and local guidance rather than applying a guessed dose.

If small spots have green edges, consider dog urine
Dog urine is one possible explanation for a straw-colored spot with darker green margins. Watering the spot promptly can dilute the urine and reduce injury. Avoid treating it with concentrated nitrogen: Penn State Extension cautions that this can cause fertilizer-burn injury similar to the damage you are trying to fix. If the grass is still alive, allow it time to recover; if the crown has died and the area is bare, repair it with seed or sod.
If damage followed fertilizer or chemical exposure, stop adding treatments
Uneven spreading, incorrect spreader settings, spills, or other chemical exposure can injure turf. Fertilizer over-application can look like drought stress, so more fertilizer is not a safe general remedy for yellow grass. For a known fertilizer spill or over-application, Maryland Extension advises collecting spilled material and soaking the affected area with repeated one-inch applications of water to help leach excess salts. Replant areas where the grass has died.

If you see patches, rings, lesions, or insects, narrow the diagnosis
Disease, pests, mowing injury, and other environmental causes can all affect lawn color. Look closely at the blades and the base of the turf for lesions, visible spores, insects, or signs of feeding. Consider the season, grass type, and shape of the damage, along with recent lawn-care events. Do not apply a fungicide or pesticide simply because the lawn is yellow; the pattern and signs should support that diagnosis.
Reseed only where grass is dead or bare
Seed will not cure living grass that is temporarily dormant or stressed. For a confirmed dead or bare patch, Penn State Extension recommends raking out dead grass, loosening or agitating the soil surface, and reseeding—ideally with the same variety as the existing lawn. Choose grass seed for lawn repair that suits your existing turf and local climate; no single seed type fits every lawn. Penn State names perennial ryegrass as one option when the existing type is uncertain, but its suitability depends on local conditions.

When the cause is still unclear
Compare the lawn’s overall pattern with the clues above rather than relying on color alone. A soil test is the most useful next step when nutrient deficiency or pH is suspected. If the damage is spreading or you see signs of disease or insects, use a local extension diagnostic resource or lawn-care professional to identify the cause before applying a treatment. Advice from Maryland and Pennsylvania extension services may not match every climate, grass species, or local fertilizer rule.
